Be aware, once you try making your own, homemade chocolate pudding, it is hard to go back to a boxed mix.

Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding with Cocoa Powder

Hershey’s chocolate pudding recipe makes a pudding that is very much like an old-fashioned chocolate pudding made with cocoa powder. This recipe makes a rich and creamy chocolate pudding that everyone will love. The great thing is when you are asked to make it again, you will agree because it is easy to make.

Grandma’s Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Recipe

When I first made this recipe from Hershey’s, with a few minor adaptions, I was surprised at how much it reminded me of old-fashioned pudding, like what Grandma used to make. Sometimes we get so stuck on the ready-made, boxed mixes, that we forget it’s also easy to make it from scratch and will taste way better.

How to Make Homemade Chocolate Pudding

The process of making homemade chocolate pudding is quite simple. To start off, you are going to take a large saucepan and add your cocoa, sugar, corn starch, and salt. Mix the ingredients together, then whisk in your milk. Add in optional egg yolks if desired and whisk in one at a time. Place your mixture over medium heat and allow it to come to a boil, while you are whisking. Let it boil for 1 minute, then remove it from the heat. Add in your butter, vanilla, and optional chocolate chips. Stir until dissolved. Serve hot, or chill for a couple of hours, before you serve chilled.

This recipe came directly from Hershey’s and has been modified by adding eggs and chocolate chips to enhance the flavor, in my opinion making the recipe even better.

Equipment Needed

Saucepan
Rubber spatula
Measuring cups
Stovetop

Ingredients

1 1/3 cup sugar
6 Tbsps corn starch
1/2 cup HERSHEY’S Cocoa
1/2 tsp salt
4 1/2 cups milk
8 egg yolks (optional, for richer pudding)
4 Tbsps butter or margarine
2 tsp vanilla extract
6 oz chocolate chips (optional)

Directions

In a large saucepan, mix sugar, corn starch, cocoa powder, and salt. Pour in milk. Whisk until combined. Add egg yolks if desired and whisk until mixed.

Place saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil, then boil for 1 minute, until mixture begins to thicken. Remove from heat.

Add butter, vanilla, and optional chocolate chips. Stir until dissolved. Stir while warm, or chill and serve. Top with whipped topping if desired. Enjoy!

Microwave Directions:

In a microwave-safe bowl, stir together, sugar, corn starch, cocoa powder, and salt. Whisk in milk and egg yolks (optional) until combined.

Microwave for 2 minutes at a time, stirring in between. Microwave for a total of 7-10 minutes, or until the mixture comes to a full boil. Stir in butter, vanilla, and optional chocolate chips if desired. Serve or allow to chill. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

The key to this recipe is to stir, stir, stir! Please note that egg yolks and chocolate chips are optional, but they do really add a lot to the pudding.
