The key to avoid making lumpy gravy is to mix just a little of the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients at a time and use a whisk to stir it well to keep it smooth.

For example, in our made from scratch recipe below, we suggest placing the all-purpose flour in a drinking glass, then adding about ½ cup – 1 cup of the turkey drippings to it. Whisk those together until smooth and then pour that mixture into a saucepan with the remaining ingredients. It will help you achieve the desired perfectly smooth turkey gravy.

How To Make Turkey Gravy From Scratch

Making turkey gravy from scratch is our favorite way to make gravy. We think it tastes the best because it’s made from cooked turkey drippings and the flavors are just purely wonderful. It’s the way our family has made it for generations.

To Make Turkey Gravy From Scratch You’ll Need:

4 cups drippings from cooked turkey
½ cup butter, melted
½ tsp black pepper, McCormick
½ cup all-purpose flour
salt to taste

Directions:

1. Carefully gather drippings from your cooked turkey and place them in a medium saucepan.

2. In another saucepan, add ½ cup flour and melted butter. Mix together until well blended and smooth.

3. Add a little of the turkey drippings to the mixture at a time, keeping it well whisked and smooth. Once the mixture in the glass has a fair amount of liquid added to it, you can pour it into the saucepan with the remaining drippings and whisk well until smooth.

4. Bring to a boil, stirring consistently to keep from burning. Remove from heat and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm over turkey, potatoes, hot sandwiches or any other way you desire. Enjoy!

How To Make Turkey Gravy From Scratch Without Drippings

If you don’t have turkey drippings available to you, but you still want to make gravy from scratch, you’ll want to choose this method.  You’ll use chicken broth as your substitute for the drippings. Here’s the recipe:

To Make Turkey Gravy Without Drippings You’ll Need:

4 cups chicken broth
½ cup butter, melted
½ tsp black pepper, McCormick
½ cup flour
salt to taste

Directions:

1. Add chicken broth to a medium saucepan.

2. In a tall drinking glass, add ½ cup flour and melted butter. Mix together until well blended and smooth.

3. Add a little of the chicken broth to the mixture in the glass at a time, keeping it well whisked and smooth. Once the mixture in the glass has a fair amount of liquid added to it, you can pour it into the saucepan with the remaining drippings and whisk well until smooth.

4. Bring to a boil, stirring consistently to keep from burning. Remove from heat and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm over turkey, potatoes, hot sandwiches or any other way you desire. Enjoy!

If you prefer a just add water version, you might want to pick up a packet or two of McCormick Turkey Gravy Seasoning Mix. It has everything you need to make the gravy already in the packet, which includes a thickening agent and all of the flavorful seasonings.

1 packet of McCormick Gravy Mix
1 cup waterIf you’re serving a larger group of people, you can double, triple or quadruple the recipe as needed.

Directions:

The package instructions state that to prepare the McCormick Turkey Gravy, you can simply stir in 1 cup of water gradually into the gravy mix. Use a whisk to stir the mixture together and heat it in a saucepan until it comes to a boil. Reduce the heat and allow it to simmer for 1 minute. Upon removing it from the heat, the mixture will begin to thicken. Serve warm and enjoy.
