How long to bake salmon per pound can be somewhat tricky. Unfortunately, there is not a rule of thumb that can apply across the board.

However, if you have a 1-pound piece of salmon that is approximately 1 inch thick you can count on it taking about 20 minutes to fully cook.

Please be aware that this does not mean that 2 pounds of salmon will take 40 minutes and 3 pounds 60 minutes. Baked Salmon Temperature Guide

Now, it is important to know what the internal temperature of your salmon is in order for it to be considered safe to eat. Like other meats, there is a recommended temperature that the inside of your piece of meat should reach before it is eaten.

For salmon, there are varying opinions as to what the internal temperature of your fish should be. The USDA recommends that the internal temperature of your salmon should be at least 145°F in order for it to be done baking. However, in a lot of cases when you bake your salmon to this internal temperature, it has a tendency to become very tough and dried out.

The medium-rare temperature for salmon is for the internal temperature to hit 125°F to 135°F. If you do choose to cook your salmon to this internal temperature, keep in mind that you run the risk of consuming unwanted bacteria because your fish is not considered fully cooked.

In most cases, you want to avoid eating rare salmon as the salmon has to be prepared and stored properly in order for it to be safe to consume. Most salmon should never be consumed raw.

Below we will go into detail on other ways you can tell when your salmon is fully cooked, and safe to eat along with monitoring the internal temperature of your salmon. Never fear, there are plenty of other ways you can determine if your salmon is cooked or not.

A good rule of thumb when baking salmon so that it is completely baked without it becoming hard and dry is to bake your salmon until it reaches the internal temperature of 137° to 140°F then remove it from your heat source so that it has a chance to rest. During the resting time, you will find that it continues baking and will reach the internal temperature of 145°F. Now you can enjoy a fully cooked salmon without it becoming hard and dried out.

How Long to Bake Salmon at 350 F in the Oven

The most common way to bake salmon is to place your salmon fillets on a baking sheet, or in a casserole dish along with your seasonings, spices, and maybe a little juice, and bake them uncovered in your oven.

The amount of time it takes to fully bake your salmon at 315°F in the oven may vary depending on the thickness of your salmon if it is thawed or frozen and if it is stuffed or not.

For your basic salmon, it will typically take between 20 and 30 minutes for your salmon to fully bake. However, it is important to keep an eye on your salmon so that it does not over bake and check it thoroughly to be sure it has completely finished baking.

For Baking Salmon With Foil In The Oven

There are many benefits to baking salmon inside foil. Not only does foil help keep the moisture from escaping salmon as it bakes, but it also speeds up the baking time of your salmon.

When you are baking salmon at 350°F wrapped in aluminum foil, it is likely that your salmon will take approximately 5 minutes less to bake than your normal salmon bake without foil.

It’s a good idea to set your timer for less time than recommended when baking in aluminum foil, then add more baking time as needed, until you reach the internal temperature.

How Long to Bake Salmon at 350 F in an Air Fryer

When you use an air fryer to bake salmon at 350°F it is likely that your salmon will take less time to bake, especially if you are baking salmon filets that are approximately 1 inch thick and 2 inches wide.

How Long to Cook Salmon at 350 F On the Grill

Baking salmon at 350°F on your grill will also take between 10-12 minutes for pieces that are approximately 1 inch thick.

To avoid overcooking your salmon, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on them and bake for more or less time, depending on the size and thickness of your salmon.

When grilling salmon, it is a good idea to brush your salmon with butter, lemon juice, olive oil, or BBQ sauce, to help keep the moisture in the fish, and prevent it from drying out.

For Grilling Salmon Filet Directly and Indirectly

When grilling your salmon it is important that you keep a close eye on it, because it cooks quickly and you don’t want it to overcook and become dry.

When you are grilling over direct heat, this means that the salmon is directly over your grill’s heat source, it is likely that your salmon may take even less time. Your salmon may be completely cooked through in as little as 6 or 8 minutes but may take as long as 12 minutes, so be sure you are watching it closely.

On the other hand, you can also grill your salmon over indirect heat. This means that your salmon is not cooking directly over your heat source, and may take a little longer to fully cook.

Typically, salmon that is 1 inch thick will take between 10-15 minutes to fully cook on your grill at 350°F. But as always, brush it with butter, lemon juice, or olive oil to help keep it moist, then watch it carefully as you bake it over your grill, as it may take slightly more or even less time than anticipated.

Should I Bake Salmon At 350 F?

Baking salmon at 350°F is ideal. This temperature allows your salmon to bake quickly but does not bake it so hot that your salmon dries out.

How to Bake Salmon at 350 F

Below we will look at some step-by-step instructions you can follow when you are baking your salmon at 350°F. These steps will help you make some of the most delicious salmon ever.

Step-by-step Instructions of Baking Salmon At 350 Degrees

Step 1: Preheat the Oven To Your Desired Temperature

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

Step 2: Prepare Salmon

Place the salmon on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush with oil or butter, a bit of lemon juice, and add your desired seasonings, such as salt, thyme, and pepper.

Step 3: Place Salmon in The Oven

Place your prepared salmon into the oven once it is preheated.

Step 4: Bake Salmon

Bake the salmon for approximately 20 minutes, checking on it periodically until it is done.

Step 5: Check the Doneness of Your Salmon

How to Know Salmon is Cooked

1. Check The Color And Texture

You will also notice that the color and texture of cooked salmon changes once it is fully cooked. Raw salmon has a bright pink or light pink color, and a slimy texture. When salmon is cooked, the color turns more to a peach color, there are areas of white or very light pink that appear, and the texture is no longer slimy.

2. Using Instant-read Thermometer

Using an instant-read thermometer to check the temperature of your salmon is probably one of the easiest methods. The USDA recommends that your salmon have an internal temperature of 145°F to be considered fully cooked. However, your salmon may reach that temperature once you have allowed it to rest.

3. Using Butter Knife or Cake Tester Methods

This method although it sounds crazy is essentially used to test the internal temperature of your salmon. If you have an instant-read thermometer, you can skip this, however it comes in handy if you do not have a thermometer.

To use this method, take a butter knife and insert it into the thickest part of your salmon. Let it sit for a few seconds, then immediately take it out and carefully press it to your lower lip. This lets you test if the inside of your fish is warm, or if it still has a ways to go.
