Are you ready to try some delicious pancakes? Let’s get started with the list of ingredients you will need in order to make this tasty breakfast recipe.

List of Ingredients

Flour. For these delicious pancakes, you can use basic all-purpose flour.

Sugar. Typically, granulated sugar is the best kind of sugar to use when making these pancakes.

Baking Powder. Baking powder is important to use, as it is the leavening agent for these pancakes, and causes them to rise.

Salt. Typically, we use iodine salt when making these pancakes, however kosher salt, and sea salt also work out as well.

Milk. You can use your favorite kind of milk for this recipe. We recommend using 2%, or whole milk for best results.

Butter. The original recipe calls for unsalted butter that is slightly melted, however, we have found that salted butter works as well, it just adds a little additional salt flavor to the recipe.

Eggs. For best results, we recommend using large eggs.

Vanilla. Vanilla is an optional ingredient for making pancakes, however, we do recommend including it as it helps you and improve the overall flavor. Your basic vanilla extract works well for these pancakes.

How to Make the Perfect Pancakes

Making the perfect pancakes is quite simple. To begin, combine all of your dry ingredients into a bowl and mix them together. Your dry ingredients include flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate bowl mix together your wet ingredients. Your wet ingredients include milk, butter, eggs, and vanilla. Whisk together your wet ingredients, then pour on top of your dry ingredients and stir, being careful to not over stir. Only stir until your batter is combined, and no big lumps remain.

Warm your griddle over medium-low heat, and drizzle with cooking spray, oil, or melted butter. Allow it to warm slightly before adding your first scoop of pancake batter.

Allow your pancakes to cook until they begin to rise slightly, and you’ll begin to see bubbles around the edge. Once both of these things occur, you can flip your pancakes over and continue cooking the other side until golden brown. Remove from the heat and serve while hot.

Toppings & Add-Ins

Another great thing about these delicious pancakes is that you can add whatever toppings you desire to them, or add additional ingredients inside of the pancake batter. Below are a few common ideas of toppings, followed by add-ins to the pancake batter below.

Tips for making the best pancakes

We have included a few helpful hints that will help you to make the best possible pancakes. Below are our top recommended tips to make this pancake recipe.

Tip 1: Have ingredients at room temperature

Before you begin making your pancakes, allow your ingredients to come to room temperature. This will help the overall consistency of your pancake batter.

Tip 2: Use fresh baking powder

Baking powder is the leavening ingredient used in these pancakes. Meaning this is the ingredient that will help your pancakes become light and fluffy.

For best results, you will want to use fresh baking powder, this means be sure your baking powder is new and fresh rather than old.

Tip 3: Let melted butter cool slightly before mixing into wet ingredients

Before mixing your butter into the wet ingredients, it is highly recommended to allow it to cool off slightly. Doing this will give you the best pancake batter.

Tip 4: Don’t overmix the batter

When mixing your pancake batter, it is important to be careful that you do not overmix the batter. We highly recommend mixing your batter just until it is combined.

Tip 5: Give the batter a short rest before cooking

Before cooking your pancakes, it is a very good idea to allow your batter to rest for a few minutes before proceeding. This is a good window of time to allow your skillet to warm up, and you’re better to rest. After it has rested, you can then proceed with making your pancakes.

Tip 6: Use just a little bit of oil on the skillet

When making your pancakes, it’s a good idea to use a little bit of oil to prevent them from sticking to your pain, but not enough to overpower your pancake batter.

Although you can use butter, we have found we prefer the results when using oil. Oil tends to allow your pancake batter to cook more evenly, but butter will help increase your flavor.

Tip 7: Don’t sweat the first batch

When making pancakes, the first batch is always the most difficult. When making pancakes, it’s a good idea to just knots with the first batch, as it typically does not turn out to be the best.

Joy of Cooking when to flip

Tip 8: Flip pancakes when you see these two indicators

Knowing when to flip your pancakes over is probably one of the most difficult things about making pancakes. There are two indicators you can watch for that will help you know the right time to flip your pancakes over.

These two things to watch for are bubbles around the edge of your pancakes and noticing that your pancake batter has begun to rise from its original state.

When you see bubbles begin to form around the edge, and your edge begins to thicken in texture, you will also notice at the same time your pancakes have become fluffier and have risen in height. When you see these two things, you can go ahead and flip your pancakes over to cook the other side.

Joy of Cooking Buttermilk Pancakes

Not only can you make classic pancakes using the above recipe, but another favorite is also to make buttermilk pancakes. You can do this using the above recipe, with a few simple changes.

To make buttermilk pancakes, simply substitute the 1 ½ cups milk for buttermilk, and change your leavening agents to include 1 teaspoon baking powder and ½ teaspoon baking soda. Otherwise, prepare as instructed above.

Sheet-Pan Pancake with Berries

Another fun way is that you can cook the above pancake recipe, rather than in individual pancakes on a skillet, you can cook your pancakes on a sheet pan in the oven. To do this you will prepare your batter as instructed above, then preheat your oven to 425°F.

Spray a cookie sheet that has short sides with oil, or baking spray. Pour your prepared batter into the cookie sheet, and if desired add berries on top. Bake in your oven middle rack for approximately 15 minutes or until done. Serve right away and enjoy.
