The Breakdown

Start breaking down Trader Joe’s chocolate-covered bananas, let’s begin by exploring the three ingredients you will need to make these frozen chocolate-covered bananas.

3-Ingredient Frozen Chocolate Covered Banana

Although there are many different kinds of additional ingredients you can use, there are three ingredients you will need in order to make the copycat version of Trader Joe’s chocolate-covered bananas.

Ingredients at a glance

Bananas

Dark chocolate

Cocoanut oil

Chocolate coating

To make an exact copycat version of Trader Joe’s chocolate-covered bananas, you will need bananas, then dark chocolate, and coconut oil. To make the chocolate coating, dark chocolate, and coconut oil are melted together, to give you a hardened chocolate shell on the outside of your banana slices.

Ingredients and substitutions

Bananas. Bananas are the base ingredient that we use for this recipe. However, if you would rather use a different kind of fruit, you absolutely can.

Think of fruits that freeze well, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, or even mango slices just to name a few. These would all make good substitutions for bananas if you want to switch things up a bit. You could also try using dried fruit, such as dried bananas, or dried mango slices as well.

Dark Chocolate. We prefer to use dark chocolate chips that have been melted. However, if you have a different type of chocolate you prefer, such as milk chocolate, semi-sweet, or white chocolate, you may also use these types of chocolate instead of dark chocolate if desired.

Coconut Oil. Although it is not absolutely necessary, we like to add a little bit of coconut oil melted into our chocolate chips so that our chocolate coating has a crisper texture to the chocolate.

The coconut oil will also give your chocolate coating that added crunch that is desired after your chocolate hardens around your banana slices. Using coconut oil is highly recommended and will help the overall texture of your chocolate-covered bananas if you do include this in your melted chocolate.

Helpful Tools

There are not a lot of tools that are needed in order to make this recipe which is great. To make this recipe, you will simply need a knife to slice your bananas, a mixing bowl that is microwave safe, a spoon or rubber spatula to stir your chocolate, and a fork to dip your bananas into the melted chocolate.

Ingredients

4 bananas, sliced

Freezing the bananas

Begin by cutting your banana into slices, placing the slices on parchment paper, and freezing them until solid. This typically takes between 30 minutes to one hour.

Making the sauce

When your bananas are frozen, you can start making your sauce. To make your sauce, combine chocolate chips, and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 20-30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until your chocolate is melted.

Putting it together

Next, take your frozen banana slices, and place each one individually on a fork. Dip the fork into your melted chocolate, then place your chocolate-covered banana, back onto the parchment paper. After all of your bananas are coated in chocolate, place them back into the freezer for a few moments to allow them to fully harden. Then serve and enjoy!

Serving Suggestions

These little chocolate-covered morsels of goodness, are great anyway you choose to serve them. We highly recommend serving them chilled or frozen. They can also be enjoyed as a snack or appetizer.

Storage Instructions

After your chocolate-covered bananas are frozen and have fully set, we recommend transferring them to an airtight container or freezer bag so that you can avoid freezer burn. If desired you may also store them in your fridge, however, we prefer keeping them in the freezer for the best results.

Recipe Notes

As you work, you may need to reheat your chocolate. When you are dipping your frozen bananas into the chocolate, it is likely to cool off and begin to set up. Sticking it back into the microwave for 30 seconds will melt it again, and help it become easier to work with.

Pro Tips

Tip 1: Use A Fork…

Using a fork when dipping the bananas into chocolate is a very important tip. When using a fork, this allows the extra chocolate to drain from your banana and fall back into your dish allowing only what sticks to your banana to stay with it. This way you don’t end up with a pool of extra chocolate surrounding your banana.

Tip 2: Place on Parchment Paper…

No matter if your bananas have already been dipped in chocolate, or not, it is important to place your banana slices on a piece of parchment paper. This allows for easy removal of your banana slices from the parchment paper after they have been frozen. Otherwise, your banana slices are likely to stick to the surface that they are on.

Nutrition Facts

We have based our following nutritional facts upon the assumption that all of the chocolate is used, and once serving contains approximately 6 slices of chocolate-covered bananas.

We have estimated that one serving (6 slices) contains approximately 241 calories. Also estimated are the following per serving, 17.1g total fat, 0mg cholesterol, 1mg sodium, 26.2g total carbohydrates, and 2.4g protein.

Make it your own

Not only can you make chocolate-covered bananas, but you can also get creative and make it your own. Think about your favorite fruits or other fillings you could add inside with banana slices. Then, make this recipe your own!

Toppings for frozen bananas

Not only can you cover your frozen bananas with melted chocolate, but there are also several other ideas of toppings you can add as well.

Peanut Butter. One idea, and we all love, is to make a sandwich filling your frozen bananas with peanut butter in the center, then dip your mini sandwich into the melted chocolate.

Nutella. Another idea is to make a mini banana sandwich with Nutella filling. Then, dip your mini sandwich into the melted chocolate and freeze again.

Variations on these chocolate covered frozen bananas

Not only can you make our above-suggested copycat recipe for Trader Joe’s chocolate-covered bananas, but there are a few recipe variations below for you as well.

Banana Pops

To mix things up a little bit, you could try making banana pops. To do this, you will want to add your bananas onto a popsicle stick and then freeze. Then, take the entire banana on your popsicle stick and dip it into the melted chocolate so that you end up with an entire banana on a popsicle stick that is covered in chocolate.

Banana Bite Sandwiches

Banana sandwich bites are another recipe variation. These can or don’t have to be on a popsicle stick. Before freezing your bananas initially, you can take your slices, and add your desired filling then make two little sandwiches and freeze. After they have frozen, dip them into chocolate, and then freeze again before serving.
