Adorable Hand-Held Cones

Paper Cones

Starting with the base of the cone is important. Typically, charcuterie cones are prepared in paper cones, but you could also use a waffle cone or another type of edible cone if desired.

However, if you’re looking for simple, your basic paper cone can be made using a variety of papers. Typically, when determining what kind of paper you want to use, think thick paper. You can use types of paper such as parchment paper, or computer paper to fold into the cone shape.

There is no need to spend a lot of money on paper cones, instead, you can easily make your own if desired. However, if you’re looking for it quick and simple you can also buy paper cones online, or sometimes from larger grocery stores.

Bamboo Skewers

Using skewers or bamboo sticks is another important item you will likely want to have on-hand for making charcuterie cones. Often you will only need one bamboo stick per cone to give it character and depth.

Cheese Cubes

Next, using a variety of cheese in charcuterie is ideal. For these charcuterie cones, it does not have to be a fancy variety of cheese although you can use fancy cheeses if desired.

For charcuterie cones, you can also use your basic types of cheese, cut it into cubes, or slices then arrange it in your cone.

Some common types of charcuterie cheese to use include cheddar, Colby Jack, Gouda, gruyere, asiago, brie, Haveri, and Parmesan.

Favorite Meats

Then, different types of meat are also key in charcuterie. You can use any type of meat that is your favorite for charcuterie cones.

A few ideas for you include salami, prosciutto, capicola, pepperoni, smoked sausage, bacon, meatballs, ham, and chorizo.

Really though, when it comes to the type of meat to use in charcuterie cones, the sky is the limit. You can use whatever your favorite types of meats are.

Fresh Fruit

Fresh fruit is another item that is usually mixed in with traditional charcuterie boards, and we recommend including it in charcuterie cones.

Some of the best types of fruit to include are berries, as they usually are incorporated the best.

Some of our favorites are green grapes, red grapes, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, black raspberries, blueberries, and mulberries. You could also include sliced fruit such as slices of pears, apples, peaches, or kiwi.

Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs add a splash of color to charcuterie. For instance, adding a sprig of rosemary helps to bring your cone to life and give it additional depth and character.

Adding herbs to charcuterie cones is entirely optional, but it is often a good idea if you would like to include them.

Other Great Foods

In addition to the basic cheese, meat, fruit, and herbs there are a few other types of foods that we like to include in charcuterie cones, which you might enjoy as well.

Some of these include pickles, olives, carrots, cucumbers, crackers, small slices of bread, or tiny breadstick-like crackers.

How to Make

Now, let’s jump into how to make DIY charcuterie cones. To start off, you will need to select a type of paper to make into a cute paper cone for each serving.

When the paper cone is made, you can begin by adding ingredients to the bottom of the cone. We have found that it often works best to rest the paper cone inside the bottom of a cup or glass so that it is held up as you work.

Begin by filling the paper cone with your desired ingredients, and the categories listed above.

How you fill the paper cone is entirely up to you. You can use your artistic flair to arrange the ingredients so that it is appealing to look at. Usually, you will only want to add one or two items of each type of food to the cone, since there is not a lot of room.

When the cones are filled as you wish, you can arrange them into a charcuterie bouquet, or set them in holders such as tall glasses, a bamboo cone holder, or even disposable cone holders.

Then serve right away and enjoy.

Tips and Tricks

Serve right away. Keep in mind if you’re not going to serve these cones right away, they should be stored in the refrigerator, because most of this food will spoil quickly if left at room temperature.

Make ahead. Charcuterie cones can be made in advance if desired. However, keep in mind depending on what types of food you’re adding to the charcuterie cones, you might not want to add them until the last minute, as some types of foods can make the paper wet and mushy.

How to Serve

Charcuterie cones can be made in advance and stored in the fridge. Once you’re ready to serve simply remove them from the fridge and serve them right away as your appetizer.

Charcuterie cones are prepared in individual serving sizes, so you don’t need to do anything fancy in order to serve this delicious appetizer.

Storage

At Room Temperature. Because charcuterie cones are made primarily of various types of meat and cheese, they should not be left at room temperature any longer than two hours when the room temperature is between 40°F and 90°F. After that they should be kept in the fridge.

However, if your room temperature is 90°F or above, your cones should remain at room temperature for no longer than one hour.

In the Fridge. No matter if you’re making the charcuterie cones in advance, or storing the leftovers, you will want to store the ingredients in the fridge.

The best way is to store the food in an airtight container, sealed in a plastic storage bag, or cover the prepared charcuterie cones with Saran wrap. Charcuterie cones can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.
