We are so excited to show you how to easily make this delicious caramel dip. Let’s get started by first looking at what ingredients do you need, then how to make it.

The Best Caramel Dip

Ingredients for this Caramel Sauce Recipe

Butter. Unsalted butter is recommended for this recipe. However if you want a slightly more of a salty flavor, you can go ahead and use salted butter.

Sweetened condensed milk. A can of sweetened condensed milk is recommended for the best overall flavor and texture of this sauce recipe.

Light corn syrup. We recommend using light corn syrup, or Karo syrup for this recipe. It is important that you choose the light corn syrup, rather than dark corn syrup. The dark corn syrup will give you a different overall texture and flavor.

Brown sugar. You can use either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar for this recipe. The main difference between the two is that you will have slightly more of a molasses flavor with dark brown sugar.

Vanilla. Vanilla extract is recommended to flavor your sauce.

Salt. For this recipe, you can use kosher salt, sea salt, or iodized salt, whichever one is your favorite.

How to Make Caramel Sauce

Start by placing a large saucepan over medium heat. Into the saucepan add your butter and allow it to heat until melted.

Once melted, add your can of sweetened condensed milk, light corn syrup, and brown sugar.

Stir the mixture to combine all the ingredients, then continue stirring as your mixture warms over medium low heat.

Bring the caramel sauce mixture to a low boil. You should begin to see bubbles popping. Once you begin to see evidence of it boiling, allow it to boil for one minute, and then remove it from the heat.

Add in the vanilla extract, and salt. Stir to combine.

Now that your sauce is prepared. We recommend allowing it to cool slightly before serving, enjoy!

How To Serve

Our caramel dip recipe is best enjoyed warm. If you are making it to serve right away, we recommend that you allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. You can also store your sauce in an airtight container, or in a jar in the fridge.

When you’re ready to serve, simply remove it from the fridge and allow it to warm to room temperature. You can also microwave it for a few seconds at a time, stirring in between to allow it to warm again.

Tips & Tricks

Stir, Stir, Stir. It is important that your caramel dip is stirred continually as it is cooked on your stove top. If it is not stirred, it is much more likely to burn.

Keep Heat Medium – Low. As your sauce is cooking on the burner, it’s important that your heat stay at a medium low temperature. You do not want to increase the heat much more, as it is likely to burn.

Storing and Reheating

How to Store Caramel Sauce

At room temperature. We strongly recommend that you store your caramel dip at room temperature for no more than two hours. After that we recommend that you place it in the refrigerator for a longer storage.

In the fridge. For the best storage results, we recommend that you store the prepared sauce in an airtight container, or seal it in a jar. Then place it into the fridge for up to one week.

The best way to reheat this caramel sauce is to transfer it to a microwave safe dish, then microwave it for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between, until the caramel sauce is warmed though.

Uses for Caramel Sauce

There are many different uses for caramel sauce. Some of our favorite uses include:

As a dip

Ice cream topping

A gift

Dip for apples

Topping for pies or other desserts

Make a Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Dip

A tasty variation of the caramel dip is to combine the above recipe with cream cheese.

To do this, you’ll want to whisk your cream cheese until it is soft, then mix in as much caramel sauce as desired. Stir until combine and fluffy.

Then you have a delicious caramel apple dip for apples, pretzels, or anything else you want to dip.

Homemade Salted Caramel Recipe

If you wish to turn this caramel dip into a salted caramel dip, you can simply add sea salt to the recipe.

We recommend that you add ¼ teaspoon salt, but to make it a salted caramel dip, you can instead add 1 teaspoon sea salt to the dip for additional salty flavor.

What to Serve with Caramel Dip:

We enjoy serving this caramel dip recipe with apple slices to dip into the sauce, or to drizzle over the sliced apples and make caramel apple nachos.

You can also enjoy this caramel dip with pretzels, cinnamon pita chips, churros, apple chips, or as a topping on pie or ice cream.

Do I need a Candy Thermometer?

For this recipe, it is not required that you use a candy thermometer. However, if you want to turn this recipe into a caramel dip recipe that will make caramel apples, and cover an entire apple with caramel, then you will want to use a candy thermometer, and cook it until it reaches the softball stage.

How do you get the perfect caramel consistency?

The perfect caramel consistency for this recipe comes in by cooking it just straight. If you cook it too long, then it will turn into the type of caramel you dip whole apples into, but simply by allowing it to bubble for one minute, it’s just enough to turn it into amazing caramel dip.

Can you use something other than corn syrup?

We do not recommend that you substitute anything else for corn syrup. You’re going to get the best overall results for the caramel dip when using light corn syrup.

What should I do if I notice my caramel is burning?

If you think your caramel is burning, quickly remove it from the burner, and continue stirring.

But, if you think the caramel dip has burned, be careful that you do not stir too much on the bottom. It’s very important that you keep a close eye on it while it is cooking and stir continually to prevent it from burning.

Does homemade caramel sauce need to be refrigerated?

We strongly encourage you to refrigerate homemade caramel sauce. This is the best and safest way to store the caramel sauce for a longer amount of time.
