This type of corn dog is made primarily using hotdogs or sausage, and mozzarella cheese. It is dipped into a sweet flour dough, and then rolled in toppings before deep frying.

American corndogs on the other hand, are hotdogs that are dipped in a corn bread mixture before being deep fried.

Ingredients for Cheese Corn Dogs

Cornbread Mix. Our favorite way to make these cheese corn dogs is to use a box of cornbread mix.

We recommend using a box of jiffy cornbread mix prepared according to the box’s instructions. You can use any type of corn bread mix that is your favorite.

Cheese. When making cheese corn dogs, there are a variety of ways you can enjoy them.

One of our favorite ways is simply to take mozzarella cheese sticks and cut them into approximately one or 2 inch pieces. Then skewer the cheese along with your hotdog or sausage.

You could also buy a can of squirt cheese, slice open the hot dog, and fill the inside with the squirt cheese.

Another way is to buy sliced cheese and wrap the hot dog in the slices of cheese.

The final way is simply to take a mozzarella cheese stick and add it onto your skewer alone.

Sausage or hot dogs. Our favorite way to make these cheese corn dogs is to use either hot dogs, or cheese filled hot dogs or sausage on a skewer along with your cheese.

Skewers. You will need skewers to hold the corn dogs together. Just regular bamboo skewers will work well. We do not recommend using metal ones for this recipe.

Oil for frying. Because you are deep frying these cheese corn dogs, we recommend that you use an oil with a high smoke point.

Oils such as peanut oil, canola, avocado, sunflower, or sesame oil are some of the best kinds for deep frying.

Whichever type of oil you choose to use, be sure to check the oil’s smoke point before you start.

How to Make Cheese Corn Dogs

Making the Batter

Begin making your cheese corn dogs by first preparing the better. We recommend using a box of cornbread mix to make your batter.

Prepare the boxed cornbread mix according to the instructions on the package. Once prepared, set it aside in a mixing bowl until you are ready to use.

Preparing the skewers

Next, it’s time to prepare your skewers. You can either add an entire cheese stick on one skewer, or our favorite way to do it is to take a cheese stick, cut it into two pieces, and cut the hot dog into three pieces.

Add first the end piece of the hot dog onto the skewer followed by cheese, followed by hot dog followed by cheese, followed by the final hot dog.

When your skewers are assembled, it’s time to coat them.

For Coating

Before dipping your skewers into the batter, you will first want to take a large pan, filled part way with deep frying oil. All you need is oil deep enough to cook your cheese corn dogs.

Place the pan over medium heat and allow the oil to warm. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature. You want to maintain a temperature of 350°F to 375°F.

When your oil is almost warm, dip your skewers into the prepared cornbread batter. After it has been coated completely with the cornbread mixture, use tongs and place the skewer into your warmed oil.

For Frying

As your cheese corn dogs are frying in the oil, keep a close eye on the temperature to maintain it between 350°F and 375°F.

After one side of your cheese corndog becomes a golden brown color, turn it over and deep fry the other side until it is also a golden brown color.

Once cooked, remove it from the oil, and place it on to a paper towel lined plate. Allow the access oil to drop off, then serve and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

Use long skewers. We recommend that you use long bamboo skewers to assemble your cheese corn dogs. We have found that this works best, especially if you are adding pieces of hotdog or sausage along with cheese chunks.

Don’t soak skewers. When using bamboo skewers for grilling, it’s very important that you soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before placing them onto your grill.

However, when deep frying anything involving bamboo skewers, you do not want to soak them beforehand. When you add wooden skewers that are soaked in water to warm oil, it’s going to pop and splatter everywhere, because of the reaction of mixing water and oil.

Instead, simply be sure you keep a close eye on the temperature of your oil so that it does not become too hot.

How to Serve

Cheese corn dogs are best served fresh from being deep-fried. We recommend that you remove them from the oil, allow them to drip dry on a paper towel lined plate, and then serve right away.

You can serve them alongside your favorite dipping condiment, or one of our favorites is to serve them alongside cheese sauce.

Storage

Room temperature. Your prepared cheese corn dogs should be left at room temperature for no more than two hours before they are stored in the fridge.

In the fridge. After your cheese corn dogs have cooled, you can transfer them to an airtight container, or seal them in a plastic storage bag. Place them into the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.

In the freezer. Once your prepared cheese corn dogs have cooled, you can freeze them if desired. Place them into an airtight container or seal them in a plastic freezer bag. Then place them into the freezer for up to three months.

Reheating

Oven. If you are reheating a lot of cheese corn dogs, the best way is to do it in the oven.

First preheat the oven to 350°F. Then arrange your cheese corn dogs on a cookie sheet.

Add them into the oven and bake for approximately 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheese corn dogs are warmed through.

Air Fryer. Another great way you can reheat his food is in the air fryer. The quantity you can reheat at one time will depend on how big your air fryer is. Begin by preheating your air fryer to 350°F.

Once it’s preheated add your dogs into the air fryer basket. Be sure to leave a space in between each corn dog.

Air fry for approximately 5 to 8 minutes or until your corn dogs are reheated. The amount of time it takes to reheat them in your air fryer may vary depending upon your specific air fryer.

Microwave. Finally, you can reheat leftover food in the microwave if desired.

Place your leftover cheese corn dog on a microwave safe plate. Cover with a damp paper towel, then microwave for one minute or until your corn dog is warmed.

What to Serve With

There are several different things you can enjoy along with your cheese corn dog.

Our two favorites include cheese sauce for your corn dog, or chili to make it into a chili cheese corn dog.

Cheese Sauce for Corn Dogs

There are many different types of cheese sauce to choose from. Basically, you want to look for a cheese sauce that you can enjoy dipping your cheese corn dog in.

Our favorite type of cheese sauce is the kind that comes in a glass jar already made, and you can warm it up if desired.

Chili Cheese Corn Dog

You can also turn your cheese corn dogs into another kind of chili cheese corn dogs.

Simply prepare a can of chili, or make some homemade chili, and top your cheese corn dog with it, or use it as a dip.

Make a Half Cheese and Half Sausage Skewer

Our absolute favorite way to make cheese corn dogs is to use both cheese and sausage or hot dogs. Then arrange both of them on a single skewer. You can do half-and-half, or you can cut it into more pieces, and arrange it alternating so that you can enjoy something different with every bite.

Condiments

Condiments are an essential item to enjoy with your cheese corn dogs. Just like a regular corn dog, we enjoy using condiments to top off cheese corn dogs, or use as dipping sauces. Some of our favorite condiments include the following:

Ketchup
