Strawberry Flavored Popcorn

Ingredients for Jell-O Flavored Popcorn

Popcorn. You can use any type of popcorn for this recipe. Often it works best when you use air popped popcorn, or we have a Whirley pop that we enjoy using to pop popcorn kernels too.

You don’t need to use any kind of fancy popcorn kernels; just basic ones work well for this recipe. You can also use a bag of plain microwave popcorn for this recipe.

Butter. You can use your favorite type of butter for this recipe. We prefer to use salted butter, but you can also use unsalted, you will just want to add a pinch more salt to the recipe.

Sugar. We recommend that you use granulated sugar for this recipe in order for it to have the extra strawberry flavor.

You can use light brown sugar instead of granulated sugar if needed, but it is likely to turn out much more like caramel corn rather than strawberry popcorn.

Salt. You can use your favorite type of salt when making this popcorn recipe. We recommend that you use iodized salt, sea salt, kosher salt, or Himalayan salt. Any of these types will work.

Light corn syrup. For this recipe you want to use light corn syrup, or light Karo syrup. Essentially, the syrup comes in light and dark, you will want to get the clear kind.

Strawberry Jell-O. To get the delicious strawberry flavor, we recommend that you use a family sized package of strawberry flavored Jell-O.

Baking soda. Baking soda is an essential ingredient, in this recipe. However, when you add it, be sure that you’re ready for its reaction!

How to Make Strawberry Popcorn

Step 1: Pop the Popcorn

Start off by popping your popcorn. We recommend using popcorn kernels and popping them either in an air popper, or in a Whirley pop.

You can also use a plain bag of microwave popcorn but be sure it is not flavored or loaded with butter. When your popcorn is all packed, pour into a large mixing bowl and set it aside.

Step 2: Make the Strawberry Mixture

In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt your butter, granulated sugar, salt, and light corn syrup, stirring continually.

Bring the mixture to a boil, and boil it for five minutes, stirring continually. Once boiled, remove it from the heat, and add your package of strawberry Jell-O, and baking soda. Stir until your mixture is combined.

Step 3: Mix and Bake

Pour the strawberry mixture on top of your pop popcorn. Stir until all of the popcorn is coded in the mixture or cover it with a lid and shake it very well until your popcorn is completely covered.

Preheat the oven to 200°F (93.3°C).

Grease a cookie sheet with edges, then pour your popcorn onto the cookie sheet. Place it into the oven, and bake for one hour, stirring every 20 minutes. After the hour has passed, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool. Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

Even Coating. In order to coat the popcorn evenly, our favorite method is to pour it into a large mixing bowl with a lid. Add your popcorn and then your strawberry mixture.

After both are added, secure the lid. Then shake the bowl thoroughly, so that all the popcorn is coated in the strawberry mixture. You can also stir it with a spoon, to help distribute the strawberry flavoring.

Use a Large Saucepan. To make your strawberry mixture, we strongly encourage you to use a large saucepan.

This is because once you add the baking soda, your mixture will react, and expand very quickly. You don’t want to use a small pan, as it’s likely to overflow.

How to Serve

Our strawberry popcorn is best served once it has been baked in the oven and cooled to room temperature. Making it in the oven helps decrease the stickiness of the popcorn and makes it more enjoyable to handle and to eat.

How to Store Strawberry Popcorn

Once your strawberry is popcorn is prepared, it is best stored in a cool, dry location. We recommend that you seal it in an airtight container, then store it in a cupboard, or pantry.

Strawberry popcorn does not have to be refrigerated and is okay to be left at room temperature for up to one week.

Make Ahead

Strawberry popcorn can easily be made in advance if desired. This recipe is great because it can be made in advance, and stored at room temperature, in a cool, dry location for up to one week.

Variations

Fresh Strawberries. While our basic recipe does not include fresh strawberries, you can add them if desired.

The best way to add fresh strawberries is to cut them into small pieces, then add them to the sauce pan along with your butter, sugar, salt, and corn syrup.

When fresh strawberries are added at this stage, it will prevent your popcorn from becoming mushy.
