Our delicious Bok Choy Stir Fry recipe is the best because it has delicious flavor from the bok choy but also our recipe has a unique visual appeal because of the delightful variation and colors textures and amazing flavors. Because our bok choy recipe is unique, you will definitely want to give it a try.

What is Bok Choy

Bok choy is a type of Chinese cabbage. You can find bok choy at most chain grocery stores in the produce section. Bok choy, being a type of cabbage, is part of the brassica family along with broccoli and cauliflower.

Key Bok Choy Stir Fry Ingredients

Bok Choy. Although you can choose between large and baby bok choy, our favorite to use is baby bok choy because of its fresh crispy flavor and texture.

Broccoli.  Although not required, we like to include some fresh broccoli florets. This helps to add a depth of texture, flavor, and extend the green color. And broccoli is a great way to turn your typical side dish into a meal.

Peas. If you’re able to find them, another one of our favorite ingredients is to include in the Bok Choy Stir Fry are sugar snap peas. These little peas just taste so good and make your stir fry taste so much better.

Carrots. Another great way to add color and flavor to your stir fry is to add some thinly sliced carrots to the mix as well.

Green onions. Another great optional ingredient to include are freshly sliced green onions. They simply help to add extra flavor and texture to your stir fry.

Garlic. Garlic is another fabulous ingredient that we strongly recommend you include. Although you can use cloves, we like to use minced garlic for the maximum amount of flavor.

Mushrooms. Mushrooms are another great optional ingredient. Typically, we like to include baby Bella mushrooms that have been thinly sliced into the stir fry.

However, if needed, you can pick up your favorite type of fresh mushrooms or canned mushrooms to include in the stir fry. Sometimes it’s simply best to pick up whatever is on sale.

Beef or Chicken. Including shaved beef or sliced chicken is entirely optional, but if you wish to do so it does help round out your stir fry and make it into an entire meal.

Lime Juice. The juice of one freshly squeezed lime also helps to enhance the overall flavor of your dish and bring out your natural flavors.

Sauce. You may choose to make your own homemade sauce or you can simply use soy sauce which is our favorite.

Oil. Using a little bit of oil to cook the stir fry will help it not stick to your pan and will give the stir fry ticket to perfection.

How to stir-fry bok choy

Now, let’s turn our attention to how you go about making this delicious dish.

Prepare bok choy for stir-frying

Before you begin it’s important to prepare all of your ingredients for cooking. Start off by cutting and washing all of your vegetables then allow them to dry before proceeding.

Cook the Stir Fry

Once all your vegetables are chopped and ready to go, place a large skillet or wok pan over medium-high heat. Drizzle oil into the bottom of the pan so that it is entirely covered with oil.

If you are cooking meat, start by adding your meat to the pan, then cook it until the meat is done.

Add your broccoli, mushrooms, sugar snap peas, and minced garlic to the pan. Stir until the vegetables are coated with oil. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are soft.

When the vegetables in your pan are soft, stir them, then add your prepared bok choy, sliced carrots, and green onions. Cook ingredients for just a couple of minutes so that they become tender.

How to season the bok choy

When the stir fry is cooked, squeezed lime juice over the pan. Stir or toss to mix in the juice. Season with salt and pepper if desired.

Serve right away with soy sauce on the side. Enjoy!

To Serve And Store Leftovers

To serve. This stir fry recipe is best when it is enjoyed right after it is freshly made. Because of that, we recommend preparing it, then serving the dish immediately.

Store Leftovers

Room temperature. Our recipe for Bok Choy Stir Fry should not be left at room temperature any longer than two hours before it goes bad it must be thrown away.

In the fridge. Any leftovers, that you wish to keep, may be stored in an airtight container or sealed in a plastic storage bag and then placed into the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. Please note that this stir fry is best to enjoy fresh.

How To Reheat

The best way that we recommend reheating any leftovers is to place them once again in the skillet on the stovetop, and heat until warmed through. We have found any other method of reheating the leftovers will cause them to be mushy, and not very enjoyable.

Types of Bok Choy

There are two main types of bok choy. These two types are baby bok choy and large bok choy.

The main difference between these two types is that large bok choy is made with larger shaped leaves, while baby bok choy has smaller leaves. While both are a type of Chinese cabbage, they are quite different in size.

Tips & Tricks

Do not overcook. When cooking stir fry at home it’s important that you do not overcook the dish. We recommend adding ingredients in a specific order so that they are nice and tender, but none of your ingredients become mushy.

When the texture of any vegetable is mushy, it’s not nearly as desirable.

Use a Large Pan. We recommend that you use a large pan when making stir fry so that you do not overcrowd the ingredients.

When you are sure that you do not overcrowd the ingredients, your stir fry will cook much more evenly.

Keep the heat high. We also recommend that you start with medium-high heat, and continue cooking a dish the entire time over medium to high heat.

Use minimum seasoning. The stir fry in and of itself has a delicious flavor and does not need to be overpowered by additional seasoning. Because of this, we recommend keeping your seasonings to a minimum.

Variations

Bok Choy and Mushroom Stir Fry

A favorite variation of this recipe is to make a minimalist Bok Choy Stir Fry dish using only bok choy and mushrooms for the stir fry.

Tofu and Bok Choy Stir-Fry

One variation of this recipe is to include tofu with the stir fry rather than meat. To do this you want to cut the tofu into cubes and shapes and cook it in your stir fry.

Bok Choy Stir Fry with Garlic

While our recipe does include bok choy and garlic, another delicious minimalist version of this recipe is to simply cook your bok choy and minced garlic together.

Stir-Fried Chicken and Bok Choy

If you want to make the bok choy into a full meal as we have suggested, you can include your favorite type of meat. If you wish to include chicken in your stir fry, simply cut your chicken into small pieces, then dip each piece first in cornstarch, then in egg whites.

After each piece is dipped, add them to your pan, and cook the chicken until it is done.

Beef & Bok Choy Stir Fry

Including beef in your bok choy stir fry is another delicious choice. You can use your favorite cut of beef that is chopped into small pieces.

Our favorite is to use thinly sliced chuck roast and cook it in the pan until it reaches the desired temperature. Adding shredded beef to the dish is a fun and tasty way to make it into a full meal.

Cook other greens with this recipe

Our recommended recipe includes adding other greens to the bok choy to make it a tasty and appealing main dish. Some of our favorite ingredients to include alongside the bok choy are broccoli, mushrooms, garlic, carrots, peas, and meat.

Keep in mind that each of these ingredients is optional, but we have found them to be a fabulous addition to the stir fry.

Absolutely! Our favorite way to make a bad choice stir fry is to include other vegetables with it which makes it into an entire meal.
