The Worst Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

Butter. For the best results, we recommend using room temperature salted butter. This will give you a cookie with the best taste and texture.

Brown sugar. We recommend that you use light brown sugar for this recipe. However, if you need to use dark brown sugar, that will work as well.

It will simply add an additional molasses flavor to your overall cookies. It will likely be very slight, and you might not even notice it.

Granulated sugar. A little bit of granulated sugar will help to round out your chocolate chip cookies.

Maple Syrup. As mentioned above maple syrup is one of our unusually recommended ingredients to include one making this amazing recipe. You can use maple syrup, or you can substitute it with the lower-cost version of pancake syrup.

Eggs. Eggs of course are essential to the cookie recipe because they help to hold your cookies together while they bake.

Flour. For this recipe, you can use your basic all-purpose flour. There is no need to use anything else.

Cornstarch. Although a less common ingredient to include when making chocolate chip cookies. However, cornstarch will help you make amazing cookies, they remind you of bakery-style cookies.

Baking powder. Baking powder, of course, is an important ingredient to include in your cookies which allows them to rise.

Baking soda. Baking soda works along with baking powder, to allow your cookies to rise.

Salt. As far as salt for your cookie recipe, we recommend that you use basic kosher salt, sea salt, or iodized salt for this recipe.

Vanilla. You can use regular vanilla or vanilla extract for this recipe. When we created it, we used vanilla extract, so if you’re using real vanilla, you want to slightly decrease the portions recommend below.

Chocolate chips. As mentioned above, use chocolate chips or another key ingredient, which the variety may surprise you.

We recommend that you use a mixture of dark chocolate chips, mini chocolate chips, and chocolate chunks. We like to use a dark chocolate candy bar that is crashed into chunks, but you can use whichever kind is your favorite.

How to make The Worst Chocolate Chip Cookies

To make the chocolate chips, begin by allowing your butter to soften to room temperature. Once softened to room temperature, add your butter to a mixing bowl, and beat on medium speed using your mixer. Beat until creamy.

Once creamy, add to the mixing bowl, brown sugar, granulated sugar, maple syrup, and eggs. Beat on medium speed once more until the mixture is combined and creamy.

Next, into the mixing bowl, with your mixer off, add all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and vanilla. Mix until combined, and the dough begins to clump into one large ball.

Add in chocolate chips, and mix just until combined.

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap, or seal it securely in a gallon bag being careful to remove any excess air. Place into the fridge for approximately one hour to allow it to chill.

Once it has chilled, preheat your oven to 350°F.

While your oven is preheating, take a cookie sheet and spray it lightly with cooking spray. Next, use a cookie scoop, or roll your cookie dough into balls approximately 1 inch in diameter. Place them onto the cookie sheet with space in between.

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until the cookies are done to your liking.

Hint: we usually like to bake them for 12 to 14 minutes to get them just right. But the exact time may vary depending on your oven, and your preference.

Once the cookies have been baked, allow them to rest on your cookie sheet for a few minutes before moving. Then place them on the wire cooling rack to continue cooling to room temperature.

Once your cookies are cool, they are good to enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

Butter. It is very important that you use salted butter that is at room temperature. You want your sticks of butter to be slightly soft, but microwaving the butter makes them too soft.

For best results, we recommend allowing your butter to sit at room temperature overnight before making the cookies, or for a few hours before making them.

If you are in a hurry, you can allow them to sit in the sunshine turning occasionally to allow them to warm to room temperature faster.

Maple Syrup Substitutes. Maple syrup is a key ingredient for making this recipe for the worst chocolate chip cookies which are actually quite fabulous.

But, the price of maple syrup is quite high, which may make it difficult or even impossible to come by. If you want a good substitute for maple syrup in these cookies, we recommend using your basic pancake syrup, honey, or even a light golden corn syrup

Storing

Room temperature. These cookies can be left at room temperature to cook, and even for storage. We recommend that you transfer them to an airtight container in order to store them longer, and for better results.

In the fridge. While you can store cookies in the fridge if desired, we recommend that they are kept in an airtight container, no matter if they are in the fridge or at room temperature, and stored for no longer than one week. Please note that if they are stored in the fridge, they may become hard.

Please note: for the best storage results, we recommend storing them in an airtight container, in a cool, dry location. This will help keep your cookies tasting the best as long as possible.

In the freezer. If you happen to have any cookies stick around long enough, they may also be frozen. To freeze your cookies, store them in the airtight container or seal them in a plastic freezer bag then place into the freezer for up to three months.

Please note that your cookies may be frozen as cookie dough or after they have been baked.

How to Serve

These cookies taste fabulous when served fresh, or even after they have had a chance to cool. You can enjoy them simply as cookies, as ice cream sandwiches, or even made into a cookie cake.

To do this you will use a rimmed cookie sheet that has been lightly greased. Then press your cookie dough out so that it covers the entire cookie sheet.

Once your cookie dough is pressed, placed it into your preheated oven at 350°F for approximately 15 to 20 minutes or until your cookie cake is done to your liking.

Make sure that the center is fully baked before removing it from the oven.

Worst Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches

Another way you can enjoy your worst chocolate chip cookies is to make them into ice cream sandwiches.

First, prepare your cookies as instructed above, then place them into your freezer overnight so that they harden.

Once your cookies are hardened, select your favorite ice cream, and using an ice cream scoop place one scoop on the bottom of the cookie, and sandwich it with a second cookie on top of the ice cream.

Gently press, then wrap the entire cookie sandwich and parchment paper, and placed back into the freezer until solid.

We recommend freezing the entire ice cream cookie sandwich for at least one hour, or overnight.

FAQs

Why Did My Cookies Spread Too Much?

Most likely your cookies spread too much because they did not contain enough flour in the dough.

If you make your first batch of cookies and they have spread too much, try adding ½ to one cup of flour into your remaining cookie dough and then baking it and see how that goes.

Why Did My Cookies Not Spread In the Oven?

Another thing you might run into is that your cookies did not spread at all in the oven. This could be because the dough is too cold, or there is too much flour in your dough.

If you run into this, try adding a little additional maple syrup, egg, or butter. Simply choose one of the above, and add more to your dough, mix it, and then bake another batch to see if those spread better.

Why are my chocolate chip cookies flat?

The cause of chocolate chip cookies being flat stems from your baking soda or baking powder.

If you have baking powder or baking soda for around too long, it can actually get old and not work as it should.

Try opening a new box and adding a little more power to your dough.

What’s the difference between baking soda and baking powder?

Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate, which can create a carbon dioxide gas mixed with an acid. Baking powder on the other hand is made using baking soda in addition to cream of tartar and cornstarch.

Which baking pan is best for cookies?

When you’re baking cookies, it can be difficult to determine which type of plan you should use. We recommend that you use a cookie sheet, which is a flat baking pan.

Our preference is to use a darker pan and spray it with cooking spray. The color of your pan actually will determine the outcome of your cookies and how they bake.

Can you freeze chocolate chip cookies?

Yes, you can absolutely freeze chocolate chip cookies. You can freeze them before they are baked, as the cookie dough, or you can freeze each cookie after they have been baked as well.

Simply be sure to allow them to cool to room temperature before sealing them in an airtight container, then placed into the freezer for up to three months.
