Simple Syrup

Share:

If you can boil water, you can certainly make simple syrup. It’s that easy!  The mixture holds true to its name because it is exactly that – simple syrup. It is used to flavor mixed drinks, cocktails and other beverages such as iced tea, lemonade, limeade or other sweetened drinks.

To make simple syrup, boil equal parts of sugar and water until the sugar is dissolved and suspended. So, by using this in your mixed drinks, you will no longer have that gritty sugar that sinks to the bottom of your drink. As a result of being boiled, the sugar is evenly suspended throughout the concoction, lending itself to a better, more thorough flavor.

If you prefer an even sweeter mixed drink, you might like to make a rich simple syrup. This is made by using 2 parts sugar to 1 part water and dissolving and boiling until suspended. If plain white granulated sugar isn’t giving it the rich flavor you’re hoping for, try demerara sugar.

You can also infuse your simple syrup with countless flavors to compliment the taste of your drink. For example, you might like to try adding some vanilla, spices, herbs or fruit. If you’re really into mango, try that. Or if you like cinnamon, put some of that in. Anyway, you can see where this is going.

The best part is, once you have created your homemade simple syrup, it will keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a month. That’s a wonderful potentially for creating your favorite mixed drinks. Isn’t that sweet!
