Perhaps it’s the holiday season, and all the festivities were the cold weather, but there’s just no better way to enjoy this time of year than to start your day off with a peppermint coffee.

Coffee shops often carry specialty drinks during the holiday season such as Starbucks peppermint mocha. Did you know that peppermint coffee isn’t very hard to make, and you can make it easily at home in a matter of minutes?

Not only can you enjoy your morning cup of coffee without having to make a stop at your local coffee shop, but you can also enjoy the Starbucks copycat recipes for a fraction of the price, and without the hassle.

Today I am excited to show you how you can easily make your own peppermint coffee recipe at home to get your day started out right.

Equipment for Fancy Coffee at Home

You might think that in order to make fancy coffee in your home you need special equipment such as a milk frother, or espresso maker. But really with this recipe, all you need is a coffee maker, a saucepan, and a whisk. Easy right?

Peppermint Syrup

There are a few different ways you can get the delicious peppermint flavor in your coffee. One of those leaves is to make peppermint syrup. Essentially it is simple syrup, with peppermint extract included in it. This means that the amount of syrup you add to your coffee will give you both the peppermint flavor and the sweetness you desire.

Even though this is a great option, I am excited to show you one that is even better so that you can get the perfect balance of sweet and peppermint that you want.

Making Frothy Milk

You can also enjoy frothy milk to go on top of you are peppermint coffee before serving it, without having to use special kitchen equipment. If you have a French press lying around, this will do the trick perfectly. If you don’t have a French press then you could also use a mason jar with a lid to get your milk a little frothy.

To use a French press to frost your milk all you have to do is add the milk into your French press, then push the plunger up and down just let it touch the top of the milk. After a few seconds, you’ll begin to see the milk expand and become foamy.

If you do not have a French press, then you can use a jar with a lid for the same purpose. Defrost your milk in a jar, simply pour your desired milk into the jar, secure the lid, and then shake the jar for a few minutes until you begin to see the milk foam.

The process of making this peppermint coffee is very easy. Essentially, it’s like making hot chocolate only in this case is going to be your delicious, flavored coffee to get your day started off right.

Let’s look together at the simple ingredients needed in order to make this easy recipe.

Ingredients Needed:

Milk. For this recipe, you can use your choice of milk. Regular milk is typically what is used, and you can use whole milk for the extra creamy version or skim milk if you prefer a skinny peppermint mocha.

You may prefer to substitute dairy milk for other non-dairy milk alternatives. Some great plant-based milk options include almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk. You can use any of these as a one-to-one substitute for regular dairy milk.

Cocoa Powder. Unsweetened cocoa powder included in this peppermint coffee recipe will give you a fabulous chocolate flavor. The chocolate blended together with your coffee and peppermint is what makes this drink the ultimate holiday beverage.

Sweetener. Typically, we like to use granulated sugar in this coffee recipe as the sweetener. However, if you prefer to substitute regular sugar for another type of natural sweetener, some good options include maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar. The amount of sugar you use is entirely a matter of your test preferences, although we will give you a recommended amount below.

Strong Coffee or Espresso. For the coffee, you can use either regular coffee that has been brewed strong or about two shots of espresso. Both of these will work and provide delicious coffee flavor, it’s simply a matter of your preference if you choose to use strong brewed coffee or espresso.

Peppermint Flavor. To get that peppermint flavor you can use a few drops of peppermint extract, peppermint candies, or peppermint syrup. You could also use fresh mint leaves if you prefer.

Topping Ideas:

Candy Cane. Serving your peppermint coffee with a candy cane is always a fabulous option. You can serve the candy cane in the coffee, or you can crash up a piece of candy cane and serve the crushed candy on top.

Chocolate Shavings. Tapping in your coffee with chocolate shavings is another fabulous way to serve your coffee.

Whipped Cream. You can’t go wrong with whipped cream on top of your peppermint coffee. It always makes things so much better.

Chocolate Syrup. Serving a peppermint coffee with a drizzle of chocolate syrup is another fabulous option

How to Make Peppermint Coffee

First, brew the coffee or espresso. If you’re using coffee, you’ll want to make sure that it is strong brewed.

Then take a small saucepan and place it over medium heat. Add your desired type of milk into the saucepan and heat it until it begins to steam, whisking continually.

Into the hot milk, whisk in cocoa powder, and sugar. Whisk until both are dissolved in the milk mixture.

Then add in your peppermint extract, and espresso or strong brewed coffee. Stir to combine.

Note: if you choose to use peppermint candy in place of peppermint extract, make sure that the candy is completely dissolved in the peppermint coffee before serving it.

After your peppermint coffee has been warmed through in combined, you are ready to serve it. Pour into your serving glass and top with froth milk if desired, whipped cream, candy cane pieces, and chocolate curls. Then serve right away and enjoy your delicious taste of the holiday season.

Tips and Tricks

Use Medium Heat. Make sure that you heat this drink over medium heat on your stovetop. If you try and heat it too warm too fast, then your milk will likely curdle, resulting in a gross drink.

Whisk Continually. In addition to heating the milk over medium heat, it is also important that you whisk the mixture continually. This will help prevent the milk from scalding.

Variations

White Chocolate Peppermint. Rather than using cocoa powder, try using white chocolate chips to turn your peppermint coffee into a white chocolate mocha!

Make it Iced. If you like iced coffee, then you are going to love this peppermint coffee as an iced peppermint coffee. All you have to do is let the coffee cool, then serve it over ice!
