When you are baking salmon at 400°F in the oven, not covered in foil, it will take very little time. Typically, your average salmon fillet will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to fully bake in your oven.

It is always a good idea to keep a close eye on your salmon as it bakes in the oven, because the time it takes may vary depending on how thick your salmon is, if it’s cut into small pieces or not, how thick your salmon is, and if your salmon is completely thawed or if it is still partially frozen.

How Long to Bake Salmon at 400 F With Foil

What about salmon that is covered in aluminum foil? Salmon wrapped in aluminum foil baked in your oven at 400°F will take a little bit longer than a salmon that is not wrapped in foil. On average, salmon that is wrapped in foil and baked at 400°F in your oven will take approximately 12 to 20 minutes to fully bake.

Again, it is a good idea to keep an eye on your salmon as it bakes because varying sizes of salmon take different amounts of time to bake.

How Long to Bake Frozen Salmon at 400°F

Does frozen salmon take the same amount of time to bake as unfrozen salmon? No, when you are baking frozen salmon you will definitely need to factor additional time for your salmon to be fully baked at 400°F.

The amount of time it takes to bake frozen salmon at 400°F will be longer than unfrozen salmon. No matter if you are baking your frozen salmon wrapped in aluminum foil, or not, you will want to allow at least 50% more baking time than if your salmon has been thawed.

For example, frozen salmon baked at 400°F that is not wrapped will need at least 15 to 23 minutes for it to fully bake in the oven. On the other hand, frozen salmon baked at 400°F that is wrapped in aluminum foil will need approximately 15-18 minutes to bake in the oven.

How Long to Bake Salmon at 400 F in the Air Fryer

You can also bake salmon at 400°F in your air fryer. When salmon is baked in your air fryer it can be wrapped in aluminum foil, or simply baked uncovered in your air fryer. Uncovered salmon baked in your air fryer at 400°F will typically take between 8 and 12 minutes for it to bake.

You may also choose to wrap your salmon in aluminum foil to bake it in your air fryer, which will help keep it moist. When you are baking salmon, covered in aluminum foil in your air fryer at 400°F, it will take approximately 6 to 10 minutes for it to bake.

When baking salmon at 400°F in the air fryer, keep a close eye on your salmon so that it does not burn or become over cooked. Because your air fryer is a much smaller oven, it cooks faster which means you will need to keep a close eye on it to avoid burning your salmon.

It’s always a good idea to set your cook time for less than you think you will need, and check on it, and air fry your baked salmon longer if needed.

How Long to Grill Salmon at 400 F

When you are grilling salmon at 400°F, it will take approximately 10 to 20 minutes for your salmon to be fully cooked. It is always a good idea to keep an eye on your salmon when it is grilling so that you do not overcook it, as some areas of your grill may be hotter than others.

Keep in mind that you can always cook your salmon until it is just shy of being done, then remove it from your grill and allow it to rest. During the rest time, your salmon will continue cooking, and turn out fabulous.

When grilling salmon you can also brush your salmon with your desired toppings shortly before the cooking time is up. If you can see signs that your salmon is getting close to being done, go ahead and add your topping, while you continue to grill it. This allows you to have delicious salmon, without it becoming overcooked.

How Long to Bake 1 Lb Salmon at 400 F

A good rule of thumb is to estimate the amount of time it will take to bake salmon at 400°F for every pound of salmon that you have. Although this is not a fool proof method, it is a good rule of thumb, then you can check your salmon to see when it is fully cooked.

One pound of salmon typically takes between 15 and 20 minutes for it to be fully baked in the oven. However, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your salmon so that you can tell when it is done after 10 minutes have passed, keep a close eye on your salmon as it cooks so that you do not overcook the salmon.

Just because 1 pound of salmon takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to bake at 400°F does not mean that a 2 pound takes between 30 and 40 minutes to fully bake. It’s always a good idea to start at 15 to 20 minutes, for any size of salmon, then check on it often to be sure you do not over bake.

Another thing to keep in mind is how thick your salmon is. Even if you have a one, two, or 3 pound salmon, if they are all approximately 1 inch thick, then they are likely to take around 15 to 20 minutes for each salmon filet to bake at 400°F.

How To Know Your Salmon Is Cooked?

Knowing when your salmon is done will help you enjoy the perfectly baked salmon. So how do you know? Below we will outline the best ways to tell if your salmon is done.

How to Know When Salmon is Done

Use an Instant Read Thermometer. Using an instant read thermometer is a quick and easy way you can judge if your salmon has been fully baked.

According to the USDA, the internal temperature of cooked salmon should reach 145°F. If you ask professional chefs, they are likely to say that your salmon will be hard and tough by the time it reaches the temperature however there is a way around it.

A good rule of thumb is to bake your salmon until it is close to reaching this temperature, usually around 137°F will do the trick. Then remove your salmon from your oven, grill, or air fryer, and allow it to rest. While your salmon is resting it will continue to bake, and the internal temperature will rise.

This will allow your internal temperature to reach 145°F without overbaking your salmon. You can also try wrapping your salmon in aluminum foil when it is nearing done so that you can keep the moisture in as well.

What Is the Proper Temperature for Salmon? The internal temperature of your salmon should reach 145°F before it is consumed.

Color. You can also tell if your salmon is fully cooked by examining the color of your salmon. When you first began, your salmon should be a bright pink color. However, once your salmon has been fully cooked, it will be a light peach color, and you may see a white section coming from inside of your salmon.

The Poke Test. Finally, you can test to see if your salmon is fully cooked, is to use the poke test. Take a fork and gently poke it into your salmon, if your salmon falls apart, then you’re done cooking, and ready to eat it!

Baking Frozen Salmon

You can bake salmon directly from the frozen state if desired. You might need to do this if you are running short on time, and simply pull the salmon from your freezer, I need to bake it right away. However, keep in mind then when you do bake your salmon from a frozen fillet, you will need to allow extra baking time in order for it to be fully done.

When you bake frozen salmon at 400°F, a good rule of thumb is to add at least 50% of your baking time to allow your frozen salmon to fully cook. This means if you estimate needing 15 minutes for your salmon fillet to bake when it’s thawed, if you are using a frozen salmon fillet, you will need to allow at least 22 ½ minutes for your salmon to fully bake.

The baking time is found by taking 15 and dividing it by two which gives you 7 ½. Then add 7 ½ minutes to the estimated baking time of 15 minutes and you end up with 22 ½ minutes of baking time for your frozen salmon at 400°F.
