How to enjoy strawberries all year long

The sad thing about strawberries is that in most locations, they are best when they are in season, which only happens for a short amount of time during the year.

However, when they’re not in season, you can enjoy making frozen chocolate covered strawberries that you can enjoy all year long.

Because these little treats are made with in season strawberries and then frozen, you can enjoy them whenever you have a craving. It’s the best all the way around!

Let’s look at the few basic ingredients you will need in order to make these amazing frozen treats.

Frozen Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Ingredients

Strawberries. We recommend using fresh strawberries whenever possible, especially if they are in season. Strawberries should have been prepared and frozen.

Although if you are in the mood to make this treat when strawberries are not in season, you can use frozen strawberries, or whatever type of strawberries are the best deal.

White and Milk Chocolate. You can enjoy making your chocolate covered strawberries with white chocolate or milk chocolate.

If you want to make something similar to Costco’s Tru Fru frozen strawberries, then you can layer your chocolate, with first white, and then milk chocolate.

We also enjoy making these chocolate covered strawberries with dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate, similar to Trader Joe’s Gone Berry Crazy dark chocolate covered strawberries.

It’s entirely up to you what type of chocolate you enjoy the best

Coconut Oil. We also recommend that you include a bit of solid coconut oil in your chocolate when melting.

Although not required, we strongly recommend that this ingredient is included because it will help your chocolate to melt evenly and create a nice glossy finish to your melted chocolate.

You can pick up a jar of hard coconut oil at most large grocery stores.

How to make Frozen Chocolate Covered Strawberry Bites

Step 1: How to Wash and Dry Strawberries

To make frozen chocolate covered strawberries, first begin by preparing your strawberries. If you are using fresh strawberries, remove the stems of your strawberries. Then wash them in cold water, and allow them to drip dry.

Step 2: Make sure your strawberries are very dry then freeze

We recommend that you allow your strawberries to dry completely, then freeze them. If your strawberries are small, then you can skip this step.

However, if they are large, we do recommend that you slice the strawberries in half or in quarters, so that they are easier to bite into when your frozen chocolate covered strawberries are complete.

When your strawberries are dried, and have been sliced, place them on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, and set them in the freezer until they are frozen. This will typically take one to two hours or overnight.

When your strawberries are frozen, it’s time to start melting your chocolate. There are a couple different ways you can go about doing this.

Step 3: How to Melt Chocolate for Chocolate Covered Strawberries

1st Option: How to melt chocolate in the microwave

Melting your chocolate in the microwave is our favorite option, as it is easy, and we have had better luck not burning the chocolate.

Begin by adding your desired type of chocolate into microwave safe bowl. Then add your coconut oil in with the chocolate chips. Add to the microwave, and microwave for 30 seconds.

Remove from the microwave and stir the mixture. Placed the bowl back into the microwave and continue microwaving for another 30 seconds, then stirring.

Repeat this process until your chocolate is completely melted.

Please note: It is very important that you only microwave for 30 seconds at a time, and stir your chocolate mixture in between.

Even if your chocolate chips, don’t look like they need to be stirred, do it anyway. This will prevent your chocolate from burning.

2nd Option: How to melt chocolate on the stove

The other option to melt chocolate is on the stovetop using a double boiler. Please note that this method is a little bit more difficult than microwaving your chocolate, and it is very important that you keep a close eye on it, so that the chocolate does not burn.

To start off using this double boiler method, you will need a pot filled an inch or two with water, then a bowl that fits on top of the pot, but one that the bowl will not reach your water.

Place your pot of water onto your stovetop over high heat. Bring the water to a boil. While your water is coming to a boil, add your chocolate and coconut oil into the bowl.

Once the water is boiling, reduce your heat to low, so that the water stays at a gentle simmer. When your heat is turned down, add your bowl containing chocolate and coconut oil on top of the pot. Rest the bowl so that it is not touching the water in the pot but being warmed from the steam.

Stir the chocolate continually while it is on the double boiler, so that it does not burn. Stir the chocolate until it is melted and your coconut oil is mixed in.

When the chocolate is melted, immediately remove it from the heat source.

Step 4: Dip and Freeze

Now, take your prepared strawberries that have been frozen, and dipped them into your melted chocolate. Place the frozen strawberries back onto the parchment paper lined cookie sheet. When all the strawberries have been dipped in your melted chocolate, placed them back into the freezer to harden.

If you wish to have a double layer of chocolate, repeat this process once more, melting your second type of chocolate, and dip the frozen once dipped chocolate strawberries in the second layer of melted chocolate. Place back onto a cookie sheet and freeze again.

Once they are frozen, transfer the chocolate dipped strawberries to an airtight container, and enjoy frozen as desired!

These little delicious treats are perfect for a snack, dessert, or anything in between.

What are Good Topping Ideas?

If you wish to add a topping to your chocolate dipped strawberries, you can add sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft, additional chocolate chunks, mini chocolate chips, nuts, or any other delicious toppings you can dream up.
