This is one of my favorite holiday recipes because it is very simple to make the dish. Especially when preparing a large meal, it’s nice to have a few dishes that don’t require a ton of attention. I also enjoy this recipe because it combines a bit of the sweet and savory flavors in one dish. Sweet potatoes
Water
Lemon juice
Granulated sugar
Brown sugar
Cinnamon
Salt
Nutmeg
Cloves
Pepper
Butter 
Raw sugar

Carla Hall: The Chew Pecan Candied Sweet Potatoes Recipe Directions

You will want to start off by washing your sweet potatoes, placing them on a cookie sheet, bake, and spray them lightly with butter. Then bake them until they turn soft to the touch. Remove the potatoes from the oven, and allow them to cool before moving on with the potatoes. 

While your potatoes are cooling off take a saucepan, and combine water, lemon juice, and both sugars. Stir to combine, then bring to a boil. Add butter, cinnamon, salt, cloves, nutmeg, pepper. Stir and allow butter to melt. Bring mixture to a boil once again. Remove from heat. 

When you have your sauce created, and your potatoes have been baked, it is time to move on to assembling your dish. Remove the peeling from your cold potatoes and slice them into pieces that are about ½ to ¼ inch thick. Place your potato chunks into a lightly greased casserole dish and lay them out nicely. Pour your prepared sauce over the top of your arranged potatoes, sprinkle lightly with raw sugar and place them back into the oven for about 30 minutes. Move and serve hot, enjoy!

Preparation

A great way to prepare for making this recipe, is to start by gathering all the ingredients you will need. Then prepare your potatoes by removing any spuds or dirt from the potatoes. Wash them off well and allow them to dry before baking. 

Ingredients

3 sweet potatoes
¼ cup water
1 ¾ Tbsp lemon juice
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar
3 Tbsp salted butter
¼ tsp cinnamon
1 ¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp cloves
1/8 tsp black pepper 
Raw sugar (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare your sweet potatoes to bake, and poke holes in each one, then line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Lightly spray with cooking spray. Place your potatoes on the cookie sheet, and lightly brush with butter. Bake at 375°F for one hour, or until your potatoes are soft on the inside. Remove and allow to cool. 

Step 2

In a medium-size saucepan, combine water, lemon juice, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Stir together. Over medium heat bring to a boil until sugars are dissolved.

Step 3

To your saucepan, add butter, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, cloves, and black pepper. Bring to a boil once again answer. Allow to boil for one minute then remove from the heat. 

Step 4

When your potatoes have cooled enough to handle, remove the peeling. Next, cut your potatoes into slices that are one ¼ to 1/3 inch thick. Arrange your sweet potato slices in a casserole dish that has been lightly greased. Drizzle your sauce on top of the arranged potatoes. Sprinkle raw sugar on top. 

Step 5

Place your arranged potatoes in the casserole dish back into the oven at 350°F and bake for 30 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

There are many different recipe variations for the sweet potato casserole. There are many ways you can make sweet potatoes into different dishes with many different variations. Let’s look at a few of the most popular variations below. 

Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet potato pie is one of the main variations to this recipe. It includes many of the same ingredients to make sweet potato pie, as it does to make sweet potato casserole. You will begin by pre-baking your sweet potatoes lake in the recipe above. Next, you will peel your potatoes after they have cooled and then mash them. Combine your mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar, eggs, milk, butter, salt, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves. Pour this mixture into a prepared pie crust and bake at 350°F for 30-45 minutes. To tell if your pie is fully baked, insert a knife or a toothpick and be sure it comes out clean. 

Grandma Carol’s Southern Sweet Potato Casserole

To make this version of Southern Sweet potato casserole, you will want to take your sweet potatoes that have been pre-baked and mash them. Then combine your mashed sweet potatoes with white sugar, butter, milk, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla, and mix. Once combined, place into a casserole dish and then prepare the topping. In your topping, you will mix chopped pecans, butter, brown sugar, and a little bit of your favorite kind of flour. Mix and then sprinkle the crumble topping on top of your sweet potato mixture. Bake at 350°F for 35-35 minutes, or until topping is golden brown. 

Sunny’s Sage And Pecan Sweet Potato Casserole

This recipe is very much like the previous recipe. You’ll start off with your pre-baked sweet potatoes that are mashed. Then combine your mashed sweet potatoes with vegetable oil, heavy cream, brown sugar, butter, flour, pumpkin pie spice, eggs, and mini marshmallows if you desire. Pour this into a prepared casserole dish. Then prepare your topping. And a mixing bowl combine flour, butter that is cubed, pecans, sage, a little bit of orange zest, a pinch of salt, and brown sugar. Mix until this becomes crumbly then pour on top of your sweet potato mixture. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown. 

Sweet Potato Cream Cheese Dump Cake CARLA HALL

For this popular recipe variation, you will want to combine a sweet potato that has already been baked and mashed with evaporated milk, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and one boxed yellow cake mix. Pour this into a prepared casserole dish then set aside to prepare the topping. Make your crumble topping by mixing together in a mixing bowl of flour, quick oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, butter, and nutmeg. Stir together until crumbly then pour on top of your casserole. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes or until fully cooked.

Sweet Potato Tarte Tatin

For the sweet potato tarte tatin, you will need to prepare your sweet potatoes as stated in the recipe above, then mix with cinnamon, brown sugar, eggs, milk, and nutmeg. Pour into a prepared tart pastry. Make it happen by combining flour, quick oats, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon and stir until crumbly then pour on top of your mixture. Bake at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes or until done. 

Sweet Potato Rolls

To make sweet potato rolls, you will start off as if preparing any other kind of bread. Take your niece, white sugar, and water. Mix well and allow it to sit for five minutes. Next, add butter, sweet potatoes, salt, eggs, and flour. Stir until combined. Cover and allow to rest for one hour. After it has risen the first time punch it down, then form your rolls. Place into your baking dish, cover, and allow to rise for 1 to 2 hours or until double in size. Preheat oven to 375°F and place your rolls into the oven to bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Slow-Cooker Apple-Rum Sweet Potatoes

Prepare your sweet potatoes by washing them and removing the spuds, then poke a hole in each one. In your crockpot combine cut and cubed apples, rum, butter, vinegar, and cinnamon. And your sweet potatoes on top and cook covered on low for about six hours. Once you are finished baking the potatoes cut each one in half. Scoop the apple mixture onto each half of the potatoes, serve and enjoy. 

Carla Hall’s Apple and Sweet Potato Tart with Brandy Pecan Glaze

Make the sweet potato tart as shown above, under sweet potato Tarte Tatin. Top with a glaze made from Brandy that has been reduced in half then boiled together with maple syrup, lemon zest, butter, pecans, and salt. Pour onto the top of your tarte. 

Garlic Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Make garlic mashed sweet potatoes, prepare your potatoes, and place them all in a pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil until your potatoes are soft. Drain and remove the skins. Mash together with butter, milk or cream, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Serve right away and enjoy. 

Grandma’s Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

Grandma’s sweet potato casserole recipe is a classic. To make this you will start off by baking your sweet potatoes until soft. Mash them, then combine with brown sugar, butter, and a hint of cinnamon. Pour into a casserole dish. Then in a mixing bowl combine all-purpose flour, quick oats, butter, salt, brown sugar. Stir until crumbly then pour on top of your sweet potatoes. Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Serving enjoy.
