Bring Back Barber’s Party Dip

Barber’s French Onion Party Dip was one of the best and we’ve not been able to find a competitive solution on grocery store shelves. Either the dip is too watery, too thick, too bland, or just doesn’t taste the best. So, we decided to take matters into our own hands.

The process of making our fresh copycat recipe involves dicing fresh onions and caramelizing them in a sauté pan. This step is the most time-consuming aspect of making French onion dip but is worth it. Enjoying fresh onions in the dip rather than using dehydrated onions makes a big difference in the outcome of the flavor.

We recommend using full fat sour cream for the best flavor for this recipe. But if you want to substitute reduced fat or fat free sour cream for dietary reasons, in its place, you can do that.

The same is true if you choose to use dried herbs of chives and parsley instead of fresh herbs. During winter months it can be difficult to find fresh chives and parsley as they’re not as readily available in our outdoor gardens. Dried herbs can work as a suitable substitute.

Homemade Dry French Onion Dip Mix {Copycat Recipe}

French Onion Dip

French onion dip is an American dip that is typically made with a base of sour cream and is flavored with onion. It is usually served with potato chips, or can be served with fresh cut vegetables such as carrots and celery. We’ve also been known to eat crackers and cheese with French onion dip as well as pretzels or pretzel sticks.

French Onion Dip Ingredients

To make our copycat recipe for Barber’s French Onion Dip, you’ll need yellow onions, butter or cooking oil, garlic, mayonnaise, sour cream, fresh chives, fresh parsley, and salt and pepper to taste.

If you don’t have access to herbs such as fresh chives or fresh parsley, you can substitute dried herbs in their place.

Why Does French Onion Dip Get Watery?

French onion dip can get watery after it’s used or if it’s left to sit for a while. Sometimes dipping chips or carrots right into the dip container can cause it to become watery.

This is caused by the dairy base that’s used to make the dip. And you’ve likely noticed this if you’ve left your container of sour cream to sit in the refrigerator for any length of time. To resolve, just use a spoon to stir it.

Your homemade Barber’s Dip Original French Onion Dip can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to four days. If the mixture becomes watery in that time, just give it a good stir and it should be good to go.

Dip, Party, Original French Onion

You might be wondering if your homemade party dip can be frozen. And quite frankly we don’t recommend it. Technically since it’s food you can put it in the freezer, but since it’s dairy the consistency and texture changes after it’s frozen and it’s not the same.

Remember when you make homemade Barber’s French Onion Dip, it doesn’t have as long of a shelf life as what is purchased in the store because it’s not chock full of preservatives. So it tastes better and is easy to make, but might not last as long.

If you’ve stored your homemade French onion dip in the refrigerator for more than a week, you might notice that it begins to turn a funny color, begins to grow mold, separates, or smells bad. If this is the case, don’t keep it, throw it out. You don’t want to risk getting sick from eating food that is no longer safe.
