Success Tips

Proof the yeast separately: For a successful loaf of bread, be sure to proof the yeast before creating your bread. This will allow you to be sure that your yeast is good, and you will not have to toss your entire loaf of bread.

Use leftover or rotisserie chicken: for an easy shortcut, use leftover chicken, or rotisserie chicken when making that bread filling. This allows you to prepare the filling faster and typically makes for more moist chicken in the bread.

Cool the filling: If your chicken is warm, be sure to cool the filling mixture before adding it to your bread.

Use a pizza cutter: Anytime you are cutting this bread, whether it is cutting the bread dough, or slicing pieces, we recommend using a pizza cutter as it makes a much nicer cut in your bread dough.

Tips for making braided bread

Softer Dough: When you were making the bread dough, be sure that you don’t add too much flour. Err on the side of caution and start by adding all but half of a cup of flour. Mix in the flour, before adding the remaining flour to your mixture. This will allow you to see if your bread starts to come together, you can leave out the rest of the flour. If you add too much flour, your bread dough will not be as soft as it could be.

Active dry yeast vs instant yeast: Although the types of yeast may be used interchangeably, be sure you are allowing it enough time for your yeast to proof.

How to make the lightest fluffiest bread: To make the fluffiest bread, be sure you don’t add too much flour, and allow it plenty of time to rise each time. One trick I like to use, is to place my bread dough into a cool oven. This allows the bread to rise nicely.

Make Ahead/Freezing Instructions:

If you would like to make the bread ahead of time, for best results, we recommend preparing it all the way until it is ready to bake, then store it in the fridge for a few hours until you are ready to bake it.

However, if you want to make it farther in advance, you can freeze the entire loaf, with raw though before baking. To freeze wrapped securely in plastic wrap, and store in the freezer for up to one month. You can also bake the bread ahead of time, then store it in the fridge or freezer. Then, simply place the bread into the oven at 300°F, and warm it for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then serve and enjoy.

Recipe FAQs

Can I freeze this bread?

Yes, the spread may be frozen for up to one month. To freeze, wrapped securely in plastic wrap, place into a freezer bag, or place into an airtight storage container.

My dough didn’t rise properly, what should I do?

There are many reasons why your bread dough may not rise, the most common of which is that your yeast is old. Before you throw out your dough, try placing it into the oven with a pan of boiling water below it, close the oven, and allow it to rise. If your dough still is not rising, you can try adding more yeast. To do this place your dough into a large mixing bowl. Open a new package of yeast and add it to your dough along with 1 cup of warm water, and 1 Tbsp sugar. Let the mixture proof for 5-10 minutes then knead together.

What can I use instead of egg wash?

If you would rather not use an egg wash on your bread, you can brush it with milk, or simply wait until after your bread has baked and bush with melted butter.

Can the dough be kneaded by hand?

Yes, you can knead the dough by hand if you want.
