How to make a Smoked Apple Pie

The Perfect Crust for Smoked Apple Pie

Begin by making your crust. Make sure that you are using cold ingredients. To start off add the flour, salt, and cubed cold butter into a mixing bowl. Cut with a pastry cutter, food processor, or whisk until you have pea-sized chunks remaining.

Slowly pour your ice-cold water into the mixture. Mix only until your dough begins to come together. By hand, roll into a ball.

Take your crust and divide it into two balls. Next, lightly flour on a clean surface and roll one ball flat. Place your rolled-out crust into a lightly greased cast-iron skillet. Take your other pie crust and roll it out as well. Set aside.

The Best Apple Pie Filling

Now to make your apple pie filling, take a deep skillet and add your peeled, cored, and cut baking apples into your skillet. Add water along with the apples. Cover the apples and allow them to simmer until soft.

Next, in a small mixing bowl combine brown sugar, cinnamon, apple pie seasoning, and all-purpose flour. Pour the mixture on top of your cooked apples. Add lemon juice. Stir to combine and allow to simmer for a few more minutes until your apple pie filling begins to thicken. Remove from heat and allowed to cool.

Time To Smoke The Perfect Pie

Preheat your smoker to 375°F.

It’s now time to assemble your apple pie and begin smoking. Pour your prepared apple pie filling into your cast-iron skillet lined with a crust.

Add your top crust layer over the apple pie filling and flute the edges of your pie crust. Brush with milk and sprinkle the top with sugar.

Add your pie to your smoker and smoke for approximately 1 hour, or until your pie crust is baked.

Remove from the smoker and allow your pie to cool slightly before serving. Serve if desired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, enjoy!

Tips for Making Smoked Apple Pie

Apples For Pie. The kind of apples you use for making your pie will change the texture and flavor of your overall pie. For this reason, it’s good to be selective when choosing your apples to make your pie. Some good pie apples include Cortland, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Jonagold, and Northern Spy.

Chill Crust. When you’re making your pie crust it is an excellent idea to use cold ingredients such as ice-cold water and very cold or even frozen butter. After your pie crust is prepared, you can chill it in the refrigerator while you are waiting for your filling to finish cooking. This will help your pie to turn out better overall when you use a chilled pie crust.

Cast Iron Skillet is best for Traeger Apple pie! Rather than using a glass pie plate to make your smoked apple pie, we strongly encourage you to use cast iron for baking your pie. If you have a cast-iron skillet or some kind of cast-iron pan, this will work the best. Otherwise, you can use an aluminum pie plate.

Variations

There are several variations you can make your apple pie. When you were making a smoked apple pie, you can choose to prepare your pie differently, such as making it a Dutch apple pie, or making it into a salted caramel apple pie.

Smoked Dutch Apple Pie

A Dutch apple pie or smoked crumb apple pie are the kinds of pie that have a crumble topping rather than two crusts. When you prepare a Dutch apple pie, this allows you to get more of a smoky flavor throughout the pie, as the crust doesn’t keep out the flavor.

You can easily convert the above recipe into a Dutch apple pie recipe by simply making half of the pie crust, then adding a crumble topping on top of your assemble pie.

Smoked Bourbon and Salted Caramel Apple Pie

You can also prepare a variation of the smoked apple pie by making it salted caramel flavored. Feel free to get creative and add your own taste touches to the smoked apple pie.

Gluten-Free. Can you prepare a smoked apple pie that is gluten-free? Absolutely! Simply replace the all-purpose flour with gluten-free all-purpose flour for both pie crust and apple pie filling. You can choose to use cornstarch to replace all-purpose flour in the apple pie filling as well if you desire. Otherwise, simply prepare as instructed above.

Super Easy Smoked Apple Pie. For those of you who are on a time crunch, or looking for a very easy way to enjoy eating smoked apple pie without any effort, there’s a way for you to enjoy smoked apple pie as well.

Room Temperature. Smoked apple pie should be left at room temperature for no more than two hours before it is refrigerated. Otherwise, there is a strong likelihood it could go bad, and we need to be thrown away.

Refrigerate. After your smoked apple pie has cooled, it is a good idea to refrigerate any leftovers. You can refrigerate your smoked apple pie for up to 3 to 4 days when stored in the refrigerator.

To keep in the fridge, it’s a good idea to wrap your pie in plastic wrap, or covered in aluminum foil. Also if you are able you can transfer it to an airtight container before refrigerating. That’s how they keep better when stored in your fridge.
