Why Should I Soak Wooden Skewers?

Grilling Kabobs

Why Should I Soak Wooden Skewers? There is actually one main, very good reason why you should soak your wooden skewers. One that could be disastrous if you don’t soak them.

Why You Should Soak Wooden Skewers

The main reason why you should soak wooden skewers is actually very straightforward. Think for a moment about what your skewers are made of. Wood, right? What are skewers used for? Primarily to cook kebabs or satays on a grill. A grill has a fire which cooks your food, when you place a wooden stick on a fire, it will burn.

The reason why you should soak wooden skewers before you cook with them is so that they don’t burn.

How disappointing that would be to not soak them, have your kebabs nicely cooking on your grill and the skewers catch on fire. The food on them will then also catch on fire, or at the very least, be lost down in the grill. It will save you a lot of time to simply soak them ahead of time.

Soaking Instructions

When you are cooking with wooden skewers, you will definitely want to take the time to soak them before placing food on them to cook.

Draw a bowl of warm water and place your wooden skewers in the water for at least 20 minutes. I would suggest placing a heavy object on top of them in the water so that they are fully submerged.

Soaking for 20 minutes in warm water will allow them to absorb plenty of water so that they don’t ignite on your grill.

If you are using metal skewers you will not need to soak them before cooking. However, it is good to be aware that your metal skewers will get very hot, and tend to stay very hot even after they have been removed from the grill. Be very careful to not get burned.

What Kind of Skewers Should You Buy

When you are trying to decide what kind of wooden skewers to purchase, I would recommend getting bamboo skewers. Skewers made of bamboo tend to be less expensive but are quite durable. Unlike metal skewers, bamboo are easy to handle when they are hot off the grill. They can also be easily disposed, after they have been used.

The main reason Why You Should Soak Wooden Skewers is so that they do not burst into flames while you are grilling. A simple 20 minute water soak will prevent this from happening to you.
