Following are 4 of the most popular methods used to melt a block of Velveeta cheese. They are each effective methods and you can choose the one you prefer according to your personal preference.
Method 1: Melting Velveeta Cheese on the Stove (in a Saucepan)
The number one preferred method for melting processed cheese is in a saucepan on the stovetop.
You’ll want to use low heat for this method and stir the cheese regularly until it’s fully melted.
To get a head start on melting the cheese evenly and more rapidly, you can prepare it by grating it with a hand grater, or by cutting it into small cubes. This will speed up the process of the cheese melting.
Method 2: Melting it in the Microwave
If you’re in a hurry, you might prefer to use the microwave to melt your cheese. This method only takes a few minutes when the cheese is prepared in advance.
Instead of placing the whole block of cheese in the microwave, we recommend cutting it into small cubes or hand grating it first.
Then place the manageable sized pieces into a microwave safe bowl and microwave them for 30 second increments. Each time an increment is complete, the cheese should be removed and stirred.
Repeat this process until the cheese is smooth and is fully melted.
Method 3: Melting it in a Slow Cooker
Processed cheese can also be melted in a slow cooker. This method allows for more of a hand’s off approach and takes a little bit more time.
To melt cheese in a crockpot or slow cooker, prepare it first by cutting it into small cubes or grating it. Then place it in the crockpot over low heat, stirring occasionally until it’s melted thoroughly and is smooth.
It can take up to 30 minutes to melt a block of cheese in the slow cooker.
Method 4: Melting it in a Double Boiler
Using a double boiler can also be an effective way to melt cheese. Some might consider a double boiler to be old fashioned, but they are still an effective tool.
To prepare a double boiler, use two saucepans with one being smaller than the other one. Add about an inch of water in the larger pan, then stack the smaller pan inside.
Heat until the water in the outside pan starts to boil. Add the cheese and stir until it’s fully melted and smooth.
