Recipe Ingredients
Pork roll. The most common type of meat to use for the sandwich is a pork roll, specifically John Taylor’s pork roll. However, because this can be difficult to find, you can also use thick cut ham, or Canadian bacon for this sandwich.
Eggs. Eggs are an essential part of this breakfast sandwich as well. You can use whatever kind of eggs you desire, and make them to your liking. The most common way to prepare the eggs are to fry them, with broken yolks, however, they can be adapted to be prepared exactly as you wish.
Cheese. For this recipe, American cheese tends to work best, as it is nice and melty, and adds a delightful taste to your sandwich. We like to use American singles for this recipe, but you can use your favorite type of cheese.
Butter. We recommend using unsalted butter rather than oil to fry the food in this recipe. It will add a delicious taste to your sandwich, and also cooks your ingredients nicely and browns your sandwich.
Roll or Bagel. There are a few different ways you can prepare this sandwich, some like to make it on a soft roll, English muffin, or even on a bun. Another way you can make it is to prepare this breakfast sandwich using a bagel.
Whichever one sounds best to you, feel free to use it. In our pictures, we make it with a plain bagel, but you can use whatever type of bread you wish.
Seasonings. We recommend having some freshly ground sea salt, and black pepper on hand to season your eggs as they are cooking. You can add other seasonings if desired, such as garlic salt, or a bit of parsley.
Sauce. There are many different sauces that you can choose from to add to your sandwich if desired. The sauces are completely optional. Some favorite ones to add include ketchup, mayonnaise, hot sauce, Chick-fil-A sauce, piri piri sauce, or no sauce at all.

How to Cook a Pork Roll
Step 1: Melt The Butter
First, take your pan and place it over medium-low heat. Add part of your butter and allow it to melt.
Step 2: Warm The Pork Roll
Next, take your pork roll slices and score the edges three or four times around the edge so that they do not roll up as they warm. Place them evenly spaced in your pan and allow them to brown on both sides.
Step 3: Toast The Bun
When your pork is almost done, take some room temperature butter and butter the insides of your bread. Place your bread into the skillet for a few seconds just to lightly toast it. Remove the bread from your pan and add your pork rolls to it.
Step 4: Fry The Egg
Next, keeping your skillet over medium low heat, crack your eggs into your warmed pan. Pop the yolks if desired, season your eggs, and flip when they are no longer runny. Continue frying your eggs until they are done.
Step 5: Melt The Cheese
When your eggs are almost done, add your slices of cheese to the top and allow the cheese to melt while the eggs are still on the burner. As the cheese begins to melt, remove the egg and cheese mixture and add it to your sandwich.
Step 6: Assemble and Serve
Now your bread of choice should be toasted with warmed pork roll, fried egg to your liking with melted cheese. Add any desired sauce, then serve right away and enjoy your delicious New Jersey-style pork roll egg and cheese breakfast sandwich!

Tips and Tricks
Toasting the Sandwich. We recommend toasting the bread for your sandwich so that it is nice and warm and toasty. You can do this by toasting it in a pan, or simply using your toaster, whichever one is easier for you.
Scoring the Pork. We strongly recommend that you score your pork before warming it in the pan. Because the pork comes in circles, it tends to fold up as it warms, making them bowl-shaped, and no longer flat. Scoring the edges will help your meat stay flat as it warms.
Customize. Feel free to customize the sandwich to make it exactly as you wish. This can be in cooking the eggs specifically to your liking, using whatever type of bun, bagel, English muffin, or brand that you prefer, and adding whatever sauces and seasonings you like the best.

Storing & Freezing
Room Temperature. No part of your sandwich whether cooked or raw should be left at room temperature any longer than two hours. If any of your ingredients sit at room temperature for more than two hours when your room temperature is between 40°F and 90°F the ingredient should be thrown away.
However, if your room temperature is 90°F or above this time decreases to one hour at which your food can be considered safe at room temperature.
Refrigerator. Your pork roll egg and cheese sandwich should be stored in the refrigerator if you wish to save it. Store in an airtight container, or sealed in a plastic storage bag, then refrigerate for up to 3 to 4 days.
Freezer. If you need to freeze your sandwich, we strongly recommend that you only freeze the pork from your sandwich, the other parts of your sandwich are not going to be good when frozen. To freeze the pork, transfer it to an airtight container, or seal it in a plastic freezer bag and freeze for up to three months.
