Marie Callender’s Copycat Banana Cream Pie

Marie Callender’s Banana Cream Pie is absolutely amazing. The way that the crust, cream, and bananas all meld together to form a delicious treat is so wonderful for your taste buds. Even if you are not a huge fan of bananas, this pie copycat recipe is the exception. Since the original pie is not always readily available to buy in the store, and let’s be honest, it’s not always a great use of your pocketbook when you can find it. Learn how you can make this delicious pie and find out just how simple it is to make on your own!

Old-Fashioned Banana Cream Pie

Marie Callender’s pie is a version of old-fashioned banana cream pie. It is a basic cream pie, with a traditional crust, banana layer, covered with vanilla cream pie filling and topped with delicious, whipped cream. People sprinkle different things on top of old-fashioned banana cream pies, depending on your taste. Some great toppings are cinnamon, cocoa powder, shredded almonds, coconut, and slices of banana.

Tips For Making Banana Cream Pie

Bananas. Make sure your bananas are ripe, but not overly ripe.

Heat. Cook your custard over medium-low heat, while you stir continually. You will not want to increase your temperature as the cream filling can burn easily.

Crust. Be sure that you fully bake your crust before adding anything else to your pie. To tell that your crust is done, it should be a light golden color around the edges. It also helps if you cut slits or put fork marks into the pie crust before baking. This will prevent it from turning into a balloon in the oven.

Chill. Before serving your pie, it is a great idea to chill your pie for at least two hours before serving. This will help your pie to be completely cool as well as help your flavors to meld together.

Whipped Cream. Try making homemade whipped cream for the best results. You can also use cool whip or purchased whipped cream, but the results using these will not be quite as good as if you make your own.

Banana Cream Pie

Banana cream pie is a perfect dessert for any occasion. It makes for a great summer or even winter treat. Out of all the types of pie, it is an easy pie to make on your own.

Marie Callender’s Banana Cream Pie

Part of what makes Marie Callender’s banana cream pie so appealing is how she has the whipped topping applied. In order to do this on your own, it is actually a simple process. You will however need a piping bag and large cake decorating tip. To make a similar design on your pie, simply press and squeeze as you back away from the pie. This will give your pie the same visual appeal as the store-bought pie.

Marie Callender’s Banana Cream Pie Recipe

There are four different sections to this banana cream pie. Below are step-by-step instructions for each section of the pie. If you follow these instructions, your pie is going to be delicious!

Ingredients

Crust:

1 ¼ cup flour
1 tsp salt
8 Tbsp butter
¼ cup ice cold water
1 large egg

Filling:

2/3 cup sugar
½ tsp salt
3 ½ Tbsp cornstarch
1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
3 cups milk
3 egg yolk, beaten
1 Tbsp butter
2 tsp vanilla
3 large bananas

Whipping Cream:

1 pint heavy cream
2 Tbsp powdered sugar (more if desired)
1 tsp vanilla

Preparation Details

You will want to begin by preparing the crust and fully baking it. Then, while you are making the filling, allow for the crust to fully cool before adding the filling to the pie crust. Before adding the filling, you will want to line the bottom of the cooled crust with sliced bananas, then cover with cream filling. Allow your pie to cool completely before topping with whipped cream. Refrigerate at least two hours before serving. For best results refrigerate overnight.

Directions:

Step 1: For Crust

To make your crust, add flour, salt, and butter into your mixing bowl or food processor. Mix until your butter is coated in flour and your mixture has lumps that are pea-sized. Add water and egg. Mix until dough just starts to combine. Stop mixing, and pat together into a ball by hand.

On a flat surface, cover with flour. Place crust dough on the flour and sprinkle more flour on top. Roll out pie crust on your flowered surface. Sprinkle a little more flour on top, then carefully fold dough into half and then half again. Gently pick up your crust and place it into a greased pie pan. Open your crust up and pinch around the top.

Bake at 375°F for 12 minutes, or until it begins to turn golden brown.

Step 2: For Filling

To make your pie filling, try to use a thick saucepan if you have one. In your saucepan combine sugar, salt, cornstarch, and all-purpose flour. Mix together well. Add milk while stirring. Cook over medium heat until the mixture begins to thicken. Once it gets to a boil, allow your filling to boil for 1 minute.

Remove from heat. Take half of the mixture and whisk vigorously with egg yolks. Add in vanilla. Pour filling with eggs into the remaining filling, mix together well. Boil for an additional 1 minute while stirring.

Remove from heat and allow to cool while you place slices of bananas on the bottom of your crust. Pour cream over banana slices and place in the fridge to cool.

Step 3: Assembly

You now have your crust made. Once your crust is made, you have sliced your bananas and lined the bottom of your crust with banana slices. You then cooked your cream filling and poured the warm mixture on top of your bananas. Then you placed the partially assembled pie into the fridge to cool. Once your pie has cooled, to the touch it is time to make your whipped cream.

To make your whipped cream, pour cream into your mixing bowl and whisk on high until stiff peaks form. Add your powdered sugar and vanilla. Whisk just until ingredients are thoroughly mixed in.

Remove your pie from the fridge and transfer your whipped cream to a piping bag. Pipe your whipped cream on top of your pie.

Allow for your pie to chill for at least 2 hours after assembled, but before serving. It is okay to allow your pie to chill overnight.

Remove your pie from the fridge when you are ready to serve. Top with cinnamon, almond slices, cocoa powder, coconut, or banana slices. Serve and enjoy!

A few pie hacks you might be interested in trying with Marie Callender’s store-bought pies are included here, just for fun. You can make each of these simply by arranging these pre-made pies in different ways.

Easy As Pie Trifle

Try stacking two of your favorite pies on top of each other. This gives you a delicious taste of each pie as you cut the pieces.

Lemon Lime Twist

Try pairing slices of key lime pie and lemon meringue pie into a cute little dish and serving together. This will give you a taste of both tropical flavors.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Pairing

Similar to the Lemon Lime Twist, try pairing together peanut butter cream pie in a layer on top of the chocolate satin pie. This gives you a delicious combination of sweet and savory in one bite.

The King

Place one slice of peanut butter cream pie on top of banana cream pie and serve in a fancy little dish. This is fun to remind your guests of the early rock and roll.

Rich coconut and chocolate pie

Finally, try paring chocolate satin pie with cocoanut cream pie. This will also give you a sweet and savory combination.

These simple little desserts are a great way to make a little bit of pie go further, and make it look fancy in the process. This works the best with store-bought pies, as they have been frozen and can be worked with easier.
