Can You Make Coffee in the Microwave?

The short answer? Yes, you absolutely can make coffee in the microwave. And the best part, you only need a few things in order to make a tasty cup of coffee in the microwave.

Brewing Coffee in the Microwave Oven

To make coffee in the microwave you will want to be sure that your microwave can sufficiently warm a cup of water. Most microwaves work at high temperatures, but you may need to turn the settings to full power, or you can simply use low heat. Either way isn’t a big deal, simply be familiar with your specific microwave.

Most microwaves won’t need any settings adjusted, however, be sure to check your specific microwave so that your coffee can be made using this simple method in a short amount of time. The goal is to heat the water so that it is just short of boiling, or at least very hot.

Must-Have: Microwave-Safe Mug

Before you begin, make sure that you have a microwave-safe mug on hand. You do not want to use stainless steel in the microwave. Rather we recommend using a microwave-safe coffee mug, or a paper cup if you need an alternative option.

Below we are going to explore the few easy steps you can follow to make coffee in the microwave. This is a great way to enjoy your morning cup of coffee!

Microwave Coffee

Coffee Grounds. There are several different types of coffee you can use when making coffee in the microwave. Our favorite is to use ground beans. You can simply add whole coffee beans to your grinder, to make them into fresh grounds. Approximately one to two tablespoons of ground coffee will make a single cup of microwaved coffee. The amount of coffee grounds you add to a single cup depends on how strong you like the coffee.

Another great option for microwaved coffee is to use instant coffee powder if you prefer it over coffee grounds. Instant coffee is especially ideal if you don’t have a coffee filter on hand.

Water. You will want to add a cup of water to your mug. We recommend that the water temperature be cold or lukewarm, that way the water molecules will react faster, to make hot water.

Coffee Filter. We recommend that you use a coffee filter to wrap the coffee grounds so that you don’t have coffee grounds floating around your cup unless you are using instant coffee.

How to Make Coffee in the Microwave

Step 1: Wrap Grounds

The easiest way is to start off by taking a coffee filter and fold it so that it becomes a pouch. Scoop the coffee grounds into the folded coffee filter and place it carefully into the mug.

Step 2: Microwave Water

Add your desired amount of water, preferably cold water, into the microwave-safe container or mug. Heat the water just until it reaches the boiling point. You can watch to see when the water boils, but try not to overflow the cup. Heat the microwaved coffee for one to two minutes, or maybe even three minutes depending on your microwave, just until the water is hot.

Step 3: Rest

Carefully remove the hot mug with the microwaved water, from the microwave and let the coffee rest for a minute. Then remove the coffee filter containing the grounds and discard it. Add cream and sugar as desired, then your hot cup of coffee is ready to enjoy.

Alternative Way to make Coffee in the Microwave

Another way you can make coffee in the microwave is to start off by heating water in one of your coffee cups in the microwave until it is very hot, or just shy of boiling.

Once the water is hot, add the coffee filter, containing coffee grounds into the hot water. Let it set for 2 to 4 minutes, or until the coffee is brewed. Then remove the coffee grounds and discard them. Add cream and sugar as desired, then enjoy your cup of microwaved coffee.

Other Brewing Methods

In addition to making a cup of coffee in the microwave, there are many different methods in which you can prepare a cup of coffee. Some of the most common methods to brew a cup of coffee include using a coffee machine to make drip coffee, making cold brew coffee which can use a mason jar and a filter, or even brewing coffee in a French press.

No matter what your favorite brewing method is, each of these can make a tasty cup of coffee to start off your day.

Tips & Tricks

Paper Towel. Some suggest using a paper towel to hold the coffee grounds, or to remove the coffee grounds from your brewed coffee. We believe that this is a bad idea. Our method for making microwaved coffee includes folding a coffee filter to hold the coffee grounds, as your coffee is brewed in the microwave.

Another great alternative is to brew your cup of coffee, with coffee grounds loose in it, then pour it into the French press, to filter out the grounds.

Yet another great alternative is to simply use instant coffee, that way you don’t have to worry about how to remove the grounds.

How to Fold A Coffee Filter

The best way to fold a coffee filter to hold coffee grounds in the microwave is to start by opening the coffee filter all the way.

When the coffee filter is laid flat, fold it in half. Divide the half coffee filter into three equal sections. Fold its two outer sections in towards the center. They should meet in the middle.

Then, take those two halves that are folded to the center, and fold them in half once more, once again so that the fold meets in the center.

You will notice that the coffee filter is opened at the top. This is where you want to add the coffee grounds.

When the coffee grounds are added to the coffee filter, fold the top over twice so that the coffee grounds do not escape the filter.

You can use a paper clip, clothes pins, or binder clip to hold the coffee filter together at the top.

Please notethat these are only to hold it together, and should not be put in the microwave at all.   After the coffee grounds have brewed your cup of coffee, go ahead and remove the coffee filter with the grounds in it, and throw it away.

Storage for Microwaved Coffee

If there is any coffee left over after making microwaved coffee, you can store any leftovers in a clean jar, such as a mason jar with a lid. Place it into the jar, and secure the lid. Then store it in the fridge for a few days.

Reheating

If your coffee has become lukewarm coffee, you can reheat your drink in the microwave if needed. Although, we will warn you that coffee made in the microwave is much better than reheating coffee in the microwave, as it often ends up with a more bitter taste than it had to start.

Variations

In addition to making hot coffee in the microwave, you can also make strong coffee in the microwave, and use it for other recipes, or let it chill in the fridge to become cold coffee. Once your microwave coffee cools, you can add it to ice in a bit of froth milk to become a delicious latte.
