Christmas Sausage Rolls

No matter if you are looking for an easy dinner for Christmas Eve, a great addition to your Christmas buffet, or a tasty appetizer to include with your menu during Christmas time, this recipe is a great addition for your holiday menu planning!

You might be wondering what makes these sausage rolls into delicious Christmas sausage rolls, well, let me explain. These are festive sausage rolls specifically filled with Christmas flavors to enjoy during the festive season because they are filled with sausage, yes, but also other tasty items like stuffing mix, and cranberries, making them the perfect addition to your holiday menu.

Let’s begin, by looking at what ingredients are included in these delicious Christmas sausage rolls recipe. Then we will go through the step-by-step instructions and how you can easily make these sausage rolls this Christmas season.

Easy Sausage Roll Recipe

A Sheet of Puff Pastry or Canned Crescent Rolls. To wrap the sausage filling, you will want to use a puff pastry sheet cut into bite-sized pieces, or you can use a can of crescent rolls. Both of these options will give you a lovely flaky pastry to cover the sausage and form the rolls.

Egg Wash. You will want to use an egg wash to get a nice golden color on your sausage rolls as they cook. To make the egg wash you will simply whisk a beaten egg and water, then brush it onto the rolls.

Sausage Roll Fillings

Pork Sausage Meat. A ground pork sausage is a fabulous option for filling your Christmas sausage rolls. If possible, my preference is to use Italian sausage, however, any type of ground sausage will work.

Egg. You will want to include some eggs to help hold the ground sausage together so that it doesn’t simply fall apart.

Cranberries. I also recommend including some dried cranberries in your sausage roll filling. A good option, if you need an alternative to dried cranberries, is to use fresh cranberries, but dried ones are easier to find, and store until you need them. Plus, they tend to be slightly sweeter, rather than so sour.

Boxed Stuffing Mix. Also included in your sausage filling is a box of your favorite kind of stuffing mix. You can use turkey, cornbread, or chicken-flavored stuffing. Whatever your favorite is.

Seasonings. When it comes to seasonings and different herbs to include in your sausage rolls, there are many options. Sage leaves are a great option, as well as oregano, thyme, Italian seasoning, or whatever your favourite herb is for the Christmas season.

Topping. A few delicious but optional toppings to finish off your sausage rolls are to sprinkle on some sesame seeds or poppy seeds before baking the rolls.

How to Make Christmas Sausage Rolls

To begin, take a large mixing bowl, and combine your sausage meat, eggs, cranberries, boxed stuffing mix, and any seasonings you desire. Mix thoroughly until the meat mixture is combined.

Next, preheat the oven to 375°F.

Then, lightly flour a clean surface. Spread your pastry dough out on the floured work surface, and make sure there are no cuts or perforations in it. Roll the dough into a big rectangle.

Then fill down one side of it with the sausage mix. Roll the pastry edges over the sausage mix until they form a long sausage roll. When it is rolled into a long sausage roll, seal the side of the pastry. Then use a sharp knife to cut the sausage rolls.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, then lay each sausage roll on the baking tray.

Mix up the egg wash by combining the egg with a tbsp water, then whisk to combine. Take a brush of egg wash around the sides of the pastry and over the top of each roll. Sprinkle on the sesame seeds or poppy seeds.

Place the baking sheet into the hot oven, and cook for an approximate cooking time of 20 – 30 minutes or until your meat is cooked, and your pastry is golden brown.

When your sausage rolls are almost done, take the remaining egg wash and brush the rest of the egg wash on the outside of your sausage rolls. Continue baking for approximately five more minutes, then remove them from the oven and place the Christmas sausage rolls on a wire rack to cool.

After they have cooled for a few minutes, serve the sausage rolls with maple syrup, and enjoy!

Storage of Christmas Sausage Rolls

At Room Temperature. These Christmas sausage rolls are best when enjoyed fresh. They can sit at room temperature for up to two hours when the room temperature is between 40°F and 90°F. After that, they must be stored in the fridge.

In the Fridge. The best way to store these leftover Christmas sausage rolls is in the fridge. After they have cooled, you can transfer them to an airtight container, then place them in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.

Reheating. You can reheat leftover Christmas sausage rolls if necessary, in the microwave for a minute or two, in the oven at 350°F for approximately 10 to 15 minutes or until they are warmed through, or in the air fryer, also at 350°F just until they are warmed through. Please note the air fryer time may vary depending on your specific air fryer.

Tips and Tricks

Pastry Dough. You may choose to use puff pastry dough; you can use canned crescent rolls. Whatever your preference as they both turn out delicious and flaky.

Don’t Overfill. When filling your pastry with the sausage filling it’s important that you don’t overfill the pastry, so that it can still wrap securely around the sausage.

Variations

Cranberry Sauce. Our recipe instructs you to use dried cranberries, or even fresh cranberries mixed in with your ground sausage. However, if you prefer, you can use cranberry sauce instead.

We recommend that you layer this inside of the pastry, rather than mixing it in with the sausage, but this is a tasty alternative if you want to give it a try.

Type of Sausage. You can also mix things up and use different types of sausage if you prefer. We like to use Italian ground sausage, but you can use other types of sausage if you prefer.

If you choose to use another type of sausage, you will want to make sure that you cut them into small pieces so that they will be easy to work with.

Add Cinnamon. Another tasty way that you can mix things up, is to add other types of seasonings in your sausage filling. A delicious option is to add some ground cinnamon, which will give you additional Christmas flavor. You could also consider adding some ground cloves, or allspice if you enjoy them.
